Looking for a new cell phone and plan

I've been with T-Mobile for about a year and a half now (my contract has been up for few months, i've just been going month to month), and i'm looking to get a new phone, and plan, since im not too happy with t-mobiles coverage area.

i'm looking for a national plan, since i do travel relatively often, so, can anyone recommend a good carrier? i've been looking at probably either nextel or verizon.

as for a phone, i have several features i'm looking for.

-fairly rugged
-can make your own ringtones (not a necesity, but would be reaaally nice)
-good antenna
-a flip phone
-color screen wouldd be nice, but its not a deal breaker

any suggestions regarding this stuff would be great!

EDIT: oh, i forgot to mention, i dont text very much, and i would probably want a plan with about 300 min a month.

I've had verizon for over a year and it's coverage has been great. My entire family has recently started moving over to them, b/c of their coverage area.

If you are travelling often you may want to check out the VX9800 on verizon's plans. It has a great internal screen that can play videos at higher resolution than most other phones, IM and e-mail capabilities and a full qwerty keyboard to make it all easy. You can get custom ringtones by using a third party app. It would be a good travelling companion.
