Looking for a new car

I have a thread going in OT about my accident, but figured now that I'm looking for a new used car I'd ask here.Haven't heard back from the insurance company yet, but the garage called and the damage is $11k worth.

I'm guessing they are going to total it. Now we have to find her a new car, she's decided that she is going to miss the Vibe but doesn't necesarilly want another one.

Looking for a hatchback or sedan, 04 and newer, 30+ mpg, reliable, auto tranny, low miles etc. Looking at $15k and under, though 14k would be better and I'd prefer 13. The money is still up in the air until we find out what insurance is going to give for it, and how much will be left after we pay off the loan. Ideally we'd like to end up in the same spot we are now, paying off the old loan, getting a new one for the amount that was left.

Suggestions?

a 3 auto will not even get close to 30 MPG.....

get a new Corolla. You could porbably score a new LE auto for 14K.

I like the honda fit, but it seems like its just outside the range of what I want to spend, since she needs an auto and the extra trim would be nice. As popular as they were this year, I'm dubious of my chances of getting a good deal even with the 08's coming out.

Fit doesnt actually get you better gas mileage than a Corolla or comparable civic.

I dont understand why people buy them. Ugly as hell(Mini-Minivan anyone?) and underpowered (109hp and comparable fuel economy to a 140hp civic?). One of the most overrated cars imho.

Fuel Economy:
Fit : EPA city/highway mileage:31/38 (automatic Base), 31/37 (automatic Sport)
Civic : EPA city/highway mileage:30/40 (automatic)
Corolla : EPA city/highway mileage:30/38 (automatic)

Yaris : EPA city/highway mileage:34/39 (automatic)

as for 15K, corollas are coming to the end of the model run and you should be able to haggle for one. Civic still sell like hotcakes and fits even more so. Not too sure about the Yaris.

The cargo space can be nice. She got the Pontiac Vibe because we have a Great Dane and a handful of times a year he has to be taken to the vet etc. He fits alright in the back of my 72 VW, because I have the rear seat removed, but it's not the most reliable and she wanted to be able to transport him herself.

right now we're looking at tdi's, but it seems that the ones in our price range have 80k miles on them, when the gas vehicles we are looking at are a lot lower.

Well no, a 2007 Civic and a 2007 Corolla both gets less mpg than a 2007 Fit and not Styling is one thing thats toally subjective, and if you want a hatch you have to get the Fit.
Any car review where a Yaris is concerned puts it way behind even the Kia Rio EXCEPT in fuel economy.
But a mile or two a gallon isn't going to be enough to compromise other things like safety and comfort.
If your going used a Focus would be the best bang for buck.

It's officially totalled. We're supposed to meet with an insurance rep tomorrow. I'm trying to decide what if anything I need to take with me to make sure I don't get screwed by their offer. KBB with excellent value seems to be coming up with 14915, I have alloy wheels selected as an option, I need to check the paperwork, I'm 80% sure she has them. Where should I look to make sure I get the best valuations?

I wouldn't even consider the Honda Fit. Smaller than a Civic, lower fuel economy, and not much cheaper (if at all). When my Dad bought his Civic he originally went to look at the Fit, but he got the Civic cheaper because the Fit is\was in such short supply. He did consider the Pontiac Vibe too, and I actually liked the car a lot (roomy, Toyota powertrain with the GM warranty, more features than the Matrix for the same or less money).
