Hi guys, just want to ask your opinion on what is the best and most secure NAS/personal cloud device? I am currently looking at Western Digital's MyCloud, however I am not yet sure if I can access my files from anywhere without going through or registering via their "https://www.wd2go.com/" website. Is there any alternative personal cloud product that will let you access your files from anywhere using secure non-proprietary methods?

Most smaller NAS boxes use vendor-supported cloud stuff for DyDNS, etc., out of the box. Keeps configuration simple.

Most smaller NAS boxes support traditional secure-ish WAN techs like SFTP and SSH.

Exposing it to the internet using non-proprietary methods is more about router configuration and stuff.

If you have a higher-end home router, it probably has VPN options that would help you not need your NAS exposed to the internet.

Buy a Synology unit. Then get a no-ip.com account to have a domain that always points to your IP address. The Synology software can auto update it's IP to the no-Ip account and keep it up to date.

Then you can connect pretty much however you want. It supports importing your own SSL if you like, has a beautiful browser based interface. As well as pretty much any other feature you could ever think of (file server, web server, media server, security camera dvr, etc.)

Trust me you'll find what you want with it.
