I have an old IBM case circa 1997/98 and while it has an AT power supply, the whole power switch/ IO ports are ATX and so I wanted to put like an Athlon XP in this case. My Problem is though, because it's semi proprietary, the CPU needs to be mounted slightly to the right because otherwise I'm sure it will hit the PSU unless of course I can get a HSF thats about 1.5" tall.... I know the pic is crappy but it should give you a good idea of where the placement of the processor needs to be. It appears that I would not be able to get an NF7-S because that would place the processor around half under the PSU half not....

I too have wondered if this can be done. At times I have had the urge to take an old case - and put the best I could inside. It is like an old Volvo - not fixed up at all on the outside - just plain vanilla - with a Ford V8 crammed uder the hood. A stealth screamer?

Hope you get an answer. I have not a clue.

Yes, this is my EXACT intent. I'd love to breathe new life into this case because it's actually not bad. The system was probably extremely low end because it didn't even have L2 cache and yet it was a Pentium system... It tried getting the system running but it was excrutiatingly painful, I was just unable to get it really working. So now I plan to get a socket A board for real cheap, stick a good Athlon in there mobile? And give it a task or sell it to a friend who needs a system.

I would imagine that the hardest part would be to modify the rear where the boards 'ports and plugs' stick out. The other major thing would be the PS - which probably would just being a matter of getting one that would fit.

New boards come with the plate for the back of the board. If there is a place on the case at all for this - you should be able to cut the hole that would hold that plate. You should be able to visuaize that with good pix like they give you at places like Newegg.

Buy the board, CPU, ram, and a power supply that will power the board (and fits). Then cut away. If it does not work, and you mess up the old case - THEN get a new case and put it all in it. Fun to try, anyway.
