Looking for a method to sync up harddrives or update specific files on them

I'm trying to find a way to track harddrive changes and so that my coworkers are able to hook their drives up and sync up with my master. Or if they've made changes to their drive to update the master. This would save us a bunch of time and we'd be able to keep everyone uptodate on the changes.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Will this be able to track specific file changes? The open file feature is nice but not really applicable for my purposes. Basically what is on the master is the test software. Changes are being made all the time and we need a system to keep everyone in sync with these changes. Thus for example if Al made a change to a single file, he would be able to check out the file off the master and make changes and then check it back in. All relevant parties would be notified and they could easily grab the updated Master HD off the network.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Thanks! But do you know if I can read files off an HD image? I guess I wasn't very clear in my last message, but the master hd holds the test suite which includes our test software in addition to multiple operating systems (including Linux and Windows). So there will not be separate files on a server but rather just a single hd image. I've only begun to put thought into this and don't know much about data backup so I appreciate it.

my suggestions have been pretty general because i don't understand precisely what you need either.

sharepoint probably won't work with HD image as it is an MS technology.

why a HD Image tho??

why not put all the files in a database, then the database can track all that for you?

Well it wouldn't have to be an HD image. We could opt to keep the files in a database track the changes and then copy those changes into the HD image. The reason I would like to deal with an HD image is because the install process and manipulation of settings in each OS is a hassle and time killer. If we could just update a single or a few files within the HD image, someone could just hook up a drive and copy the image with all the updates.

Sorry for not being clear.

would this be on a lan or over a WAN??

what kind of security concerns?

As of right now this would be over LAN. I would eventually like to be able to expand this to our overseas office and they would have access to the network here and update or make changes to the master accordingly. Encryption over LAN should be enough.

Thanks,

btw, I'll be off to lunch for a bit
