I'm looking to get some radios that are in the 5-10 mile range (actual - not clear line of site).

I've seen the 12-mile Motorola Talkabouts, but those only get like 1 mile in real world with trees, buildings, etc. I need something that can do 5-10 miles. It can cost a few hundred dollars per radio.

Any ideas?

i read an article recently that said all of those 5-10 mile radios were crap...hardly any of them actually worked that far...hardly any of them worked outside of a mile...
The only thing worth getting for long range radios are the nextel walkie talkies whcih use the wireless network to actually create a connection between people but that only works in the city...

It works wherever Nextel has a cell tower.

trying to advoid Nextel radiois? I was hoping for some kind of Non-Cellular type radio. Nextel doesn't always have coverage where I go and I don't want to keep renting the Nextels.

Citizens Band Radio Service

First thing I thought too.

Or get a HAM radio licness and use those bands!

Any more info on this?

Go to Radio Shack, buy the book, take the test, and use better radio equipment!
