Looking for a linux distro

I have a couple of old boxes that I want to put to work in a dc project.
one is a celeron 233 lappy and the other is a p2 166 with 16 meg of ram.

Both machines have win 95 on them and I want to put a distro that will run dc client software.
I am a linux noob but it wont be hard to setup still I think.
Thank you all.

Try vector linux.

It's based on Slackware Linux so all the packages from slackware are compatable, but the installed packages are specificly selected and recompiled to run on older hardware. They use minimalist versions of software whenever possible. Not the pretiest thing, but it should work.

Requirements are 166mhz cpu, 32megs ram and just shy of a gig of disk space. Although it can be made to run on less. Recommends a 233 + 64meg setup.

Ouch...by any chance, do you have another 16mb you could put in there? Do you happen to be good with command line stuff? a gui-less vector(It asks during install if you want X - just pick no to go w/out a gui) is probably the only way I can see a 16mb box off and running with any ram free, let alone, avaliable for DC.

Edit: Avaliable for DC" - I mean, most DC software takes alot of ram to run, and no matter what you do, you'll be hard-pressed to find a project to put on there.

Debian will run on 16 meg of ram?

Most Linuxes will run with 16M of ram, you just can't expect them to run well and you may have to do some extra work to get them installed. I believe the bare minimum for Debian is 12M.

I installed Vector Linux on a Pentium 1 200Mhz, and it runs beautifully. You will definitely need to boost tham RAM a little. You can probably find someone in the FS/FT forum who will give you RAM for that machine.
