My friend is really into photography and just got a new Canon Rebel XTi 10MP DSLR. I havent gotten her any thing for christmas yet and I wanted to get her either a really nice tripod or another lens for the camera. The camera comes with a Canon 18-55mm lens. Im looking at this kit, but she really wants a super wide angle lens. Can anyone reccomend me a good super wide angle lens? Im looking to spend no more than around $200-250.

Im also looking for a nice tripod, she is really into long exposure night time shots. Nothing too fancy, but I dont want anything cheap. I just noticed a tripod thread down the page that Im going to check out. Thanks.

I would not get that package; I would rather get quality components that would last me longer (but cost more). That lens is the low end of Canon's line up and has slow AF without USM, although you can still get good pictures out of it. Canon (10-22mm), Tamron (11-18mm), Tokina (12-24), and Sigma (10-20mm) all make wide angle lenses, however the cheapest is ~$450. I would recommend that you get the tripod mentioned in this thread. The legs are about $150 and a head will be about $75, so right in the middle of the price range. The tripod and head build quality is very good and should last your friend very long.

EDIT: Added the Tokina lens

Hey zylander. As Jawo mentioned, the Bogen Manfrotto 190XPROB is great. I bought this tripod, and it is one of the best investments I've made thus far. The ease of setting up the tripod is unheard of. Very strong and very stable, highly recommended. As someone once told me, a tripod is like an umbrella. You can buy one every time it rains or buy a really good umbrella that lasts. (Did that illustration kind of suck? Anyways it worked for me ;))

Now to shed some light on the lenses... I would not buy the kit that you found. The lens found in that kit is a zoom and not a wide angle, not to mention it is of a poor build. I would either save some money and get one of the lenses that Jawo mentioned, or get her a gift card to B&H

That's the tripod setup I have. I really love the grip-action tripod head. It can't turn/twist as much as a 3-way head, but for portraiture and such it works awesomely.

I have a 3-way head for my tripod but I never seem to use it anymore.

The 190XPROB kit is good, but I don't like the head.

If you want a 3-way head, I would go with something like this:

Thanks for the help guys. I ended up going with the 190XDB and the 486RC2 ball head. Seems like a sturdy tripod, and it was a decent price for everything. Plus I really like the ball head and how it can do vertical shots, that is one thing my friend expressed an interest in; like taking vertical shots of a building from the ground.
