Looking for a laptop

My dad is in the market for a new laptop. He's getting sick of his old desktop and wants to become mobile. He only would be using it for internet, word, email, some movies and chatting. He would like to have a fairly big screen but will settle for a screen thats around 16. He would want to have it so he would not be upgrading it all of the time too. If you have any suggestions please let me know. Thanks

First of all,
Laptop screen sizes in general: 12.1", 13.3" widescreen, 14" widescreen, 14.1", 15", 15.4" widescreen, 17" widescreen

There were a few 16" screens made, but they're not common

How mobile does he want to be? To take it around everywhere, I recommend a 14" or smaller screen. If he wants something that will sit at a desk a lot but still wants to carry it around, a 15 or 15.4" screen will do well. Lastly, a true Desktop Replacement (DTR) will use a 17" screen.

Let us know what size you think he would need and what his true mobility habits are and we'll get you squared away.

He would prefer a 17 but would settle for a 15.4, And he wou.ld be pretty mobile with it, like going to starbucks and bringing it to work.

I also forgot to ask for a price range 😉

Some great 15.4" notebooks coming to mind: Acer 8100 series, Asus Z71V. The Sony FS550 is okay, but I wouldn't pay for than $1500 for it. The HP dv4000 series should be solid too, with some great features for the money.

17" notebooks: Dell Inspiron 9300, HP zd8000 (Full-size keyboard w/numberpad, unfortunately its a Pentium 4 though; zero mobility)

I really think he wants a 15.4" notebook, 17" is a lot to carry around to Starbucks.

Price range?

Only laptop I'd carry around with a 17" screen is mac.
Those 'desktop replacement' laptops are monsters.

I was going to recommend a T42, but that Tecra looks like just what he's looking for.

The Dell 9300 is less than 7lbs; not bad at all
