Since I will be useing this for online banking, I have been doing some reading up on spyware, and how people can connect into your computer without you knowing it. I am concerned about that. I also have read that IBM as introduced a fingerprint system. Is that safer?

Ahh I see now.

The security issues you bring up are easily fixed through software. Primarly a good anti-virus software (Norton, Mcfee etc), as well as a spyware cleaner software (like AdAware, google it you'll find it), as well as running all of your windows update stuff (Service Pack 2 will help tons here).

So if its just software issues you can put that on pretty much any laptop. IBM does have that niffty thumb scanner thing but there is not huge incentive for it. Basically you can set it up so you have to scan your thumb in order to log into the computer.

You could also consider a Mac based laptop since there are very few virui, and spyware for the Macs. However, I don't know a great deal about antivirus etc for macs.

Yes, you should maybe consider a Mac laptop, as there are very few viruses, and spyware and adware dont affect the Mac platform. I have Norton Antivirus 9 for Mac. I use it just in case I need to send some files to my PC buddies, and make sure they dont get infected with any viruses.

Consider looking into the Apple iBook.

Well it depends for what you describe you want to do pretty much any laptop on the market today will fit the bill. You kind of have to narrow it down a bit you looking for a ultraportable? What kind of battery life do you need? Any preferance to CDRW or DVDRW drives? Screen size an issue? Touchpad or trackpoint? Price range?

Walmart has some real cheap ones available - if all you want is the minimal system for what yoru described and not much more.

Missy if you would like to get a "no frills" laptop that will last you long time get a IBM. Perhaps a X31 which is small and light that has long battery life. Or if you like all the knick knacks and trinkets try a Dell or Hp. For style try a ibook or a Sony. There are many to choose from. In my humble opinion I would pick the IBM. I believe in their service. In fact I actually got my cracked screen repaired by them. And excellent service and product. Best of luck to you.
