Looking for a Laptop

Alright... my tax return is not far away. Because I was absolutely obliterated in taxes, I will have some extra money floating around that I can invest in a laptop.

I need some suggestions on what to look for. First, let it be known that this will not be my primary system. The rig I have at home is pretty powerful, so that's what I'll use most of the time. I need something to take with my to class, though... I also think it will be handy to have around the house; maybe when I'm watching football I can take it out on the couch with me... or when I'm playing Oblivion, I can use my laptop to watch MLB.tv (etc).

I'd really like to limit my spending to like $600 or $700, but if you don't think that's enough, let me know. One thing I wanted to ask in particular: how do you feel about buying a refurbished laptop? Is it hit-or-miss? Or is it generally good/bad? Tiger Direct sends me a lot of emails with some really good deals (granted, they may have rebates and I know how notorious that site is for those), but they're always refurbished systems.

So basically, I'd just like a dual core laptop, preferably with a couple gigs of RAM, since it will probably come with Vista. It doesn't have to be game-able at all -- I have an 8800 GTS on my home rig. 🙂

Any thoughts?

What about one of those refurbed IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads...the Pentium M/Win XP models from a couple years ago (T-series I think?). They're some of the most reliable around. Wouldn't be super-quick, but since it sounds like you're just surfing the web on it, should be enough.

come on you can buy a brand new notebook with that price range! Dell and HP offered a best deal with huge rebates!
