ok, i am deciding on a gateway, dell, or sony, which is the best for the money? i am looking into the 12.1 screen model. the "ultra lights" or "ultra thins".

are there any other vendors that i should look into? thanks!

Another vote for the IBM Thinkpad. We just got around 50 of these where I work for our Win 2K conversion, very nice.

ok then...what do you all think of these choices.

ibm x23
gateway 200
dell x200

so far, from what ive seen (and maybe i missed a few little things) the gateway comes with a docking bay that includes an optical and floppy but does not come with a portable drive. the ibm and dell only come with a portable drive and the docking bay cost a sh1tload.

whcih do you think is more essential?

key points ive noticed:
800 mhz for both the dell and ibm
933 for the gateway
i think the ibm comes out to be the most. if you add the same features for all
dell 2nd
and gaetway 3rd.

(when i configured i may have screwed up cause i was in a rush)

bottom line, any one have experience with any of these? if yes, please lmk, if no, what do you guy think of the choices and are there any others you would recommend.

thanks dudes!

I would probably go with the Gateway if it's a lot cheaper and faster. Otherwise I would go with the Dell. I don't like IBM due to their very high price. One thing to remember is that Gateway may not be around to support their products due to their financial situation.

You get what you pay for 😉. And you can be pretty damn sure that IBM will be around to support their products.

IBM makes the nicest, most ergonomic, sturdiest notebooks out there. Period. Yes, they're pricey. However: IBM's eraser-head pointing device works fantastic compared to touch pads. IBM's laptop keyboards are in a league of their own. They feel great. IBM's TFT's are wonderful. IBM recesses their screens into the lid so they don't get marred by pushing against the keyboard in your laptop bag. (ala Dell, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Gateway, etc, etc, etc) Yes, they're pricey, but nothing else even comes close to their quality and ergonomics.

the thing about the ibm x series is that the processor is slow compared to teh other brands.

1611AV you have a good point about the screed being recessed. anyone have any bad/good experieneces with ibm and other brands not having this feature?

for a similarly featured laptop, the ibm cost hundreds more. 🙁

man oh man.....what to do!!!!

2 things:
first,

wow, that FUJITSU is sweet!
besides the small screen, it look like it is a very full featured item.
what do you guys think of the crusoe processor?? is it any good??

second,

the thing that sucks about the IBM is that you have to buy ALL the accessories on top of that STEEP price!! 🙁 the gateway comes with the bottom attaching bay that has a dvd or cd rom for the 1999 price. the ibm is 2000 + 199 (for X2 media slice) + 200 (dvd media bay) !!!!! this sucks!!! it looks sweet too!!

so for a similarly configured machine, the ibm will come out to about 500 more!!!! 🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁

I can vouch for the IBM. Any series they have is well worth the money. Show me another laptop company that has more driver & BIOS updates for their laptops. You can't get support like that for the most part with the other vendors. Some of that high price you pay initially pays off in the end, with all of the support you get for the Thinkpad lines.

Sure, you pay for almost all of the goodies you would need, but they will work for the lifetime of the laptop 95% of the time.

I agree about the screens. Out of all of the laptops I have compared, the IBM's have some of the best screens in the business.

The X Series is nice...... 😀

P.S. -- Also, be sure to check out the video chipset type. Half of the Thinkpad (A & T Series) line has ATI Mobility Radeon (Various flavors) for video, which translates to some pretty decent gaming on a laptop 😉

ok....will DEFINIETLY have to think about the IBM...

what about the fujitsu? it has won MANY awards for its design and all the kinda stuf.
any personal experiences? anyone?

thanks!!

true true. i have heard many bad things about sony. but they look pretty sweet.

i am really interested in that fujitsu but i know nothing about the crusoe processor.

anyone with experience????

thx!!

Avoid Sony unless you absolutely love the design and don't care about support.

Dude, get a Dell. 🙂 Tough to beat Complete Care and you will need the support.

That Fujitsu surely looks nice. 😀 I don't have any first-hand experience with Crusoe, but I read that its performance absolutely sucks. But then I also read some conflicting opinions about it. So my answer: 😕

yeah..i was thinking about either the dell or the gateway. they both loook nice and both are comparable.....if that is they are both made by samsung.

i will have to see who give the next GOOD deal! 🙂

btw, most laptops are made in Taiwan/Japan.

My friend works in a big OEM (for DELL) in Taiwan and he said they assemble the laptops and put DELL logo on it, 🙂
