looking for a laptop that runs cool

Looking to buy a Windows based laptop with these specs, "that runs fairly cool!!

Must haves:
- runs cool
- less than 6 lbs
- built in bluetooth
- built in wireless

Nice to haves:
- Sonoma chipset
- Firewire
- DVD burner
- SVideo out

Have looked at the Asus S5A and the Latitude X1, but from what I understand, they both get a little toasty! Any suggestions? Thanks!

IBM Thinkpad R52
Sonoma-based, 14" or 15"
DVDRW & Bluetooth available
Fire-wire & S-Video standard
Relatively inexpensive

The one I have runs about 40C idling w/WiFi on, which is pretty decent for a Sonoma machine
It is not the thinnest one out there, but is well built.

I believe you also want something small as well? You can look for notebooks that have Transmeta CPUs, they run fairly cool. Or if you have the dough, a T4X model can fulfill most of your requirements.

The Thinkpad R52 is a little bigger than I would like. The T43s sound good.

If a T43 owner is reading this, could you please tell me if it runs relatively cool?

Thanks!

I've been using a 14" T43 w/1.86GHz CPU. It runs 45-50C idling @ 800MHz; haven't tested load temps. It is not cool by my opinion or many others. Get a 14" T42 if you want a portable, cool machine; but its not Sonoma 😉 Not that it matters

EDIT Now I saw that Sonoma is a"nice to have." Sonoma does bring some extra performance, but not worth the extra heat & battery life IMO. Pick up a T42 14" with 1.8 or 2GHz CPU, all the rest of what you want, and love it 🙂 My 15" T42 is great, but 14" is the way to go for portability

thank you everyone for the input! this is a great forum!

fbrdphreak...after your suggestion, i looked into T42s. unfortunately ibm.com does not seem to offer one with built-in bluetooth. perhaps i should get it anyways and go with a usb blue tooth adapter.

in any case, i appreciate your feedback on the t43 not running cool. without being able to actually play around with a thinkpad @ a store...its a tough decision to buy one....especially given their price!

My T42, 2379-R9U, has built in Bluetooth. If you get the TABOOK.PDF file from the forum fbrdphreak suggests, that list all available models and features, not all of which can be easily accessed through the web.

T42 isn't that cool running. The laptops today all run warm because of the speed and size. cool may equal luke warm. Hot means you'll burn.
