Looking for a Laptop / Notebook cooler

My wife is getting an HP DV9000 for Christmas and I'd like to get a cooler to go along with it. I know that laptop coolers get mixed (often pretty negative) reviews but I'm really concerned about the heat generated while she's gaming with the laptop sitting in her lap. Even a flat aluminum surface that just lets some air flow under the computer would be fine. Everything that I've seen on the net just seems too damn small for a 17" widescreen, the one model that claims to be made for 17" laptops is only 13.5" wide... something doesn't add up. Any advice that ya'll can offer would be appreciated.
