I don't have internet service here so can anyone recommend an app where I can download the news when on wifi and read them while on the bus and so forth?
 
Before I got the iPhone and just had the Touch, Byline was my most used apps. It was a recommendation from a poster on this site. Byline is an RSS reader, so you would have to use Google Reader to subscribe to rss feeds. Byline will then sync with Reader, and can cache the page so you can view the original offline too. It costs $4, but if you use Reader, it's very worth it. I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives just as good, but I never bothered to look since I was satisfied with Byline.

Instapaper is also a very good app. But it's more for saving an article that you stumble upon, but don't have to time to read at the moment. It's different from Byline, but that's another app I found invaluable.
