Hi I?m currently in the market to upgrade from my old 17? inch to either a 19? or 21? CRT monitor.

My first question is which size I should go for? I?m mainly a gamer, other uses being typing the occasion word document for school and lots of browsing. Would 21? be very beneficial to me? Or should I just go with a good 19?? High refresh rates are fairly important for me because I don?t want my eyes hurting after hours of excessive looking.

I have a budget of around $600 and being a gamer I want the picture very crisp and clear. I have been considering the Sony 19"CPD G420 since its had a fairly good rap up from people on these forums and others, and my neighbour has the 17? version which is fairly impressive. The one thing that really annoys me it is it has those 2 supporting wires that cast those two faint lines across the screen, and they bug me a fair bit. I don?t know if I had the monitor whether I would get used to it for not so it?s a hard decision.

That?s why I?m still open to suggestions from people. So any advice on a quality 19? or 21??

One other thing. I once got a link a while ago from this forum on a really good monitor comparison guide. It let you pick from a range of monitors and compare them with each other with each getting a score based on what features u picked to be most important to you. If you know of something like this please link me.

Thanks.

I recently hooked myself up with a 19" NEC FE991SB *(black cabinet). It's a 19" DiamondTron flat picture tube CRT monitor. The color is great and I play a lot of Tribes 2 / WC3 / CFS3 on it. I'm actually a web designer so a good picture was important.

Anyway I managed to pick it up for under $250 at a local Future Shop here.

I was in the market for a high quality monitor, and all high quality monitors are AG (apeture grille) so there isnt really a way to get rid of the two lines, but they are faint and you'll probably get used to them as did I

Yeah I guess I will probably get used to the lines if I go for a AP. Thanks for the input guys.

Any other recommendations? Or is the Sony the way to go? I have heard in other places that NEC's are pretty good but that one you listed oblius had a kinda low refresh rate for me. 85hz at 1024? Whats what my current 17" does. But thanks anyway.

Samsung 900NF 19" aperture grill CRT. Best monitor I've ever owned. That being said, I bought this 8 months or so ago and haven't paid much attention to new CRTs since then so there may be better out there.

Edit: I have to look closely to notice the two faint AG lines on the display... never been an issue for me but tastes vary I guess.

Since you have $600 to spend, it's enough for you get a 21" DELL P-1113, then why buy those 19" monitors?
P-1113 is made by SONY for DELL, it's same class as CPD-G520P which is $100 more.

Wrong. There are high-end shadow mask monitors. The high-end designation is has nothing to do with Shadow mask vs. Aperture Grill.

Cornerstone p1460 (what I have at home)

Another high end shadow mask choice would be Eizo.

I have their 21" F931, it's a bit above your budget though, at least what I paid for it is.
Then there's the F980 which is about as high end you can get, but that's out of most people's budget :(

Nec's FP series of 22 inchers are AWESOME! They're Diamondtron tubes, and they have DVI!

Thanks guys, that Samsung sounds good I may check it out along with this Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2060u. Has anyone got any experiance with this monitor? I have seen nothing but praise for it at various websites and magazines and have seen a decent price for it.

Thanks.

Only D-sub to DVI-A, some argue it makes a difference from the increased bandwidth, others say no. I have the NEC FP955, and am pleased with it although I am in the process of getting a new video card. I ran it with a Gainward GF4 Ti4200 until it (video card) crapped out on me and so I am thinking of either getting a matrix g4xx, ati radeon 7500/8500/9x00, or possibly another gf4 cad though that seems unlikely as i play few games these days.

Picture was vibrant, very bright, and text sharp. Solid construction as well.

Good luck finding the 2060u. If you go shadowmask also check out the Hitachi CM828.

I have a 22" FP2141SB... it doesn't have dvi in.. my old fp1315 did but it was replaced with this one. This monitor has two analog in connects though.. its pretty sweet I put my comp on one connect and my gc on the other mmm progressive scan gc yum.

Anyway my old fp when I used dvi in boy was it sweeter than sweet.... When they sent me a replacement with no dvi in I was gonna go crazy on them but then I saw the retail on this one is 800$ so I kept it.

Order from www.dell.com, they always have some discount, so you can get a 21" P1113 around $600 with free shipping.
My parents and I have 4 DELL monitors, 2 P1110, 1 P992 and 1 M992, I like them all.
The customer service is good and their warranty is the best, if the monitor goes bad, they will ship another one to your door next day and you can put the old monitor in their box and send it back and the shipping charge is also on them! You know how much it will cost to send a 19" or 21" CRT monitor, right?
I don't think I will buy any monitor other than a DELL.

It's my understanding that model was discontinued several months ago and few are in the channel. This is at least true with many online stores.

I've read many user reviews which claim that the Sony CPD-G520P is the best damn sub-$1000 21" monitor, while I've read others which state that the Mitsubishi 2070SB-BK is. I myself was recently in the market for a budget 20" before buying an 21" IBM P260 DVI+SVGA (Mfg. Sony Trintron) Black FD Total Flat Screen .24mm Aperture Grille 1920x1440@75Hz shipped for $340 at merkortech.com. Yeah it's a grade-A monitor but the damn thing looks brand new, and for a monitor that was top-of-the-line fetching $1000 a couple years ago, it's still a kick-ass monitor as it displays very sharp crisp text and images; games look awesome too, I was playing UT2K3 and Ureal 2...I'm never going back to a 17" again. :)
