Looking for a guitar

I want to learn, so I'm interested in an electric guitar and amp pretty cheap. What are some good entry models I can learn on?

I'm kind of interested in this too.

I hear Epiphone's pretty good as far as guitars, and their entry models are about $150-250.

you might find some pretty damn decent second hand stuff that would be MUCH better than those entry-level packages.

I have a friend that works at the local guitar center, so I should be able to get a deal on some stuff too.

No, not too cheap. Cheaper option would to look for one that's used, but the starter packages are not bad either if you don't want the hassle of hunting stuff down. You can always upgrade the equipment depending on whether you stick with playing.

Go to the store and try one out if you can.

GC ftw. If you know a friend who works there, he probably knows some guys who know a lot about them. Ask him. I can give you one word of advice. Do NOT buy a guitar online. EVERY guitar is different. The sound, the feel, everything. Go into to GC and play a few in your price range. Acoustic, electric, etc. See what you like. Hell, you can even take down the $5000 Martin acoustic if you want

I figure a couple hundred buck to get me all I need to try it out, and if it turns out that I really like it I can get some better stuff down the line.

If you're just learning, I would start out with an acoustic, but that's just me.

Well, according to IrishRockMan from Atlanta, GA, "This Set Rocks!"

But they're both starter packages. I'd just go for the cheaper one and use the $100 you'd save for better equipment down the line or one wild and crazy night at your local Taco Bell.

Although I think it looks much better in Maple, but those are on backorder.

He has the $700 model, although he said he was very impressed by the quality of the cheap model.

Try it out then. But you should ultimately go with what is comfortable for you, e.g. aesthetics, playing-wise. And keep in mind that's the $700 model, not the $150 version.

I have a friend who swears by Dean guitars. He says they're Gibson quality at half the price.

Get one of the starter packs: Ibanez, Epiphonw, Squire.

If you hate it, you won't have a $1000 place holder. Although, it would probably retain its value pretty well, might even appreciate in 20 years. I got a Mexican Fender and $100 Fender amp. Love the guitar, just don't play it all too much cause I suck.

Also the Epiphone line is great...I have the Les Paul Epiphone G400 Custom...here is a great ebayer to look at for guitars

Stay away from Squier.

If you go with an Epiphone just be sure to look it over good for quality issues. Buy in person only.

The first one I looked at (Special II SG style) had a bad jack for the cord. It would punch into the body of the guitar when trying to plug it in.

The second one (Les Paul style Special II) was missing two of the three screws on the backside for the electronics and had a small split in the body.

Third one was actually in decent shape.

I ended up ordering one of these. in the Maple finish. How hard is it to learn guitar? I've played trumpet for 7 years, so I have some music experience, but not with a string instrument.

Edit: It was $160
