Looking for a Good Virus Scan Utility

I am looking for a well-written virus scanning software for Windows, as an alternative to Norton Anti-Virus. I just got fed up with the reminders to buy their subscription. Preferebly I was looking for an open-source type program that is ideally free for personal use. All recommendations appreciated.

AVG is ok, and I think Fprot (do a search) is still offering a free version, though updates for fprot are only given like once a month for the free version. I don't think either version is as good as Norton, but for free they can't be beat.

Is AVG adequate for getting rid of Nimda? I just found that everyone of my MP3 folders have an EML file in them.

It's worth a try.

Trend Micro's Housecall might work - online scanner, so no need to install a program.

I installed that Norton sh|t on my computer once a long time ago and it'll be a cold day in HELL when I do it again. I couldn't even UN-install it. I had to re-install windows. :|

You really should'nt be cheap when selecting an anti-virus program. I don't think that that is the software I would look for in freeware. Jut my two cents. I have never had any issues with nortons or mcafee. I prefer norton, but just get the antivirus. Hell, you can get that for free if you put as much effort into your search as you have this thread. Isn't your whole problem the fact that you are just to cheap to pay get rid of the subscription reminders. You should really try harder 😉

IMHO, I was not trying to be cheap. I just came to the conclusion that the Management of Norton AV these days has turned into a nickle and dime corporation.

In fact a lot of "freeware" software these days are written better than mainstream consumer programs that you buy for $49 from compUSA or something.

Just look at CDex, or even the various distros of Linux. Great stable software that does the job, with more ingenious ways to make money than nickel and diming the consumer with pay for updates. Even microsoft doesn't make you pay for it's service packs.

The people of Ananatech forums have an amazing knack of finding the best programs that are available to a sophisticated user. For example, if anyone has not tried X-Setup for windows, give it a try, for what it does, it's quite impressive.

LoCache--I'll go along with your opinion. I've supported Symantec for way too many years of upgrades to pop $20/yr for the AV defs. I've given them the last of my $$'s. For ~$4/yr, for last year's sub, it was worthwhile....but, not for $20. Just a lame attempt to force you to buy their newest 200* version of , which I don't need or want, when I've got the previous version of System Works.

I guess I'll try the uninstall/reinstall first.

Another vote for AVG which works with 95/98/ME/2K/XP,btw they also do a pay version as well called AVG Professional.
