I currently am using a Maxtor USB 2.0 card (NEC chipset I believe) and performance seems awfully slow compared to my buddy's mobo with on-board VIA based USB 2.0.

I did a test using an external USB 2.0 hard drive and the difference is night and day. Anyone have or know of a good PCI USB 2.0 card?

Do you have SP1 installed for WinXP? It is required for USB 2.0 performance.

If so, I used a Belkin USB 2.0 card and it worked great.

Actually, neither of us have service pak one installed. One the machine with the Via based USB 2.0, I can copy a gig of data 3 - 4 times faster than the other using the same external USB 2.0 hard drive.

So I guess it's about time you installed SP1, huh? SP1 is free and provides certified MS support for USB 2.0. Please try it before spending money on new hardware.

Not to mention all of the SECURITY UPDATES. This is why Blaster spread like wildfire...

I got blaster and I had SP1 as well. But that's another point.

SP1 is excellent; well worth the 100+MB network setup download even on dial-up.

My point was that people don't apply patches, let alone service packs that contain hundreds of patches. We wonder why MS gets hosed (and often rightly) for security flaws, and in Blaster's case, a month after a patch is issued.

Actually, I have applied the blaster and it other variants patches. I just have not upgraded to SP1.

My office's server for which I connect via VPN boots anyone off who does not have the appropriate patches installed after it scans your machine.

Well I guess I'll give SP1 a shot and see what happens.
