Looking for a good SSD

Am looking for a good SSD for my laptop.

Don't care too much for huge performance but for reliability, consistency and power consumption.

Drives I am looking at

samsung 840
crucial m500
Muskin Chronos
Sandisk Extreme

Not too sure if 250/240/256 GB will be enough, computer is already at 210 GB used space and there isn't that much that I can take off it.

Suggestions?

The Samsung and Crucial probably have the best reputation, lowest cost, with a bit of a performance edge to the Samsung. Inevitably, someone will bring up the Samsung's TLC based flash. The worries have so far proved to be completely unfounded. Personally, I'd get the Samsung. I was stung by 2 faulty Crucial M4s, and have had zero issues with my 840.

Overall Samsung is the default OEM supplier of SSD's to the big names. Including their laptop options. It's that way for a reason they have been bulletproof. I haven't heard of a single complaint going back to the early days of SSD's.

The Crucial I highly recommend as well probably has not counting specials the best $ per GB price and that will get better as stock increases.

Between the 830/840 and the M4/M500 I don't really think there is much reason to look else where.

I bet theres someone out there in this world where his 840 fail and second one failed. Buy from amazon. Dont trust sites. Theres hundreds of thousands of people with a M4 , how come they dont have your problem. Also theres hundreds thousands 840 1 or 2 or more bad apples will happen.

Also I dont know what your firmware history is. maybe you didn't update it properly or something. Anyhow M4 or 840, go with sammy 840 non pro .and get 512GB version or else your gonna run into problems like you said. gl

Tough call on both. The non-Pro have more over-provisioning as part of trying to keep the TLC alive, and, using TLC, they write a good bit slower. But, they're cheaper. How small you can manage with, and how much you want to spend to make that management an easier task, is up to you. 60GB is really tight with Windows Vista or newer, 120GB OK, and you only get more room to maneuver in as you increase the capacity.

Personally i've owned kingston hyper X, crucial m4, ocz vertex 3, ocz agility 3 and sandisk extreme. they all performed very well, with no issues whatsoever.

what i do is i look on each hardware maker websites for their top ssd, and then i pick one on sale. All the drives mentionned above i got them on sale over time 😛

If you already have 210 gbs of stuff, I would recommend the Samsung 840 500gb drive. You don't ever want to fill up an SSD completely because the speed starts to go way down when that happens.

I would only get the 840 PRO version if you use any software frequently that does a lot of writing. I know there is more to it such as longer life MLC and TLC and all that, but faster drives will probably come out long before it dies anyway...

Ive had really good luck with Corsair SSD's as well.
They've been one of micron's largest competitors..

And all the SSD's ive owned from them have been solid.

samsung or crucial

830 vs 840/840 pro or M4 vs M500, the general assumption is, the older the drive is, the more reliable it is, while said that, 840 and M500 have been out for some time now without any disaster incidents, personally I'd opt for a 1TB M500 (crucial) for the mere size of it, and if I wasnt looking for super space, the 840, 840 pro if the money tree is in bloom.

Last question. My laptop has an Msata bay. Could I just drop a mssd in there and then clone my HDD to the mssd? (Preferred software to do this???).
My laptop HDD (lenovo y580) gets quite hot; idles at 45-50 degrees under gaming load up to 59 degrees. Is that safe for an HDD? Should I replace it too?

Looking at plextor M5M mssd

You could, but an mSSD tops out at 256GB right now, which you've said is already limited.

I'd get the Sandisk Extreme 2 480GB. Its performance is extremely consistent as judged in the new AnAndTech review, and with 14% spare area, you really don't have to worry about feeding it more 🙂
