Looking For a Good Portable MP3 Player

XZeroII

Lifer
When I say good, I mean cheap, but also nice (if there is such a thing). I also would like it to play the mp3's off CD because 32 or 64 meg is not nearly enough. Any ideas?

I am looking for the same thing! My rio500 is getting abit roughed up and everytime it bumps on something, the thing turns off!!

Anyone got any good suggestions for a MP3 player with 128mb of built in storage that also runs on an internal rechargable battery?

if you're looking for a mp3 cd player, grab a riovolt. Under 100 bucks and pretty damn good. Others will say "oh the slim-x is so much better and yada yada yada" but the Riovolt serves its purpose pretty damn good.

Don't get the Compaq iPaq PM-1. It definately sucks.

The skip protection is so bad...they claim 8 minutes, I got 8 seconds.

It's smaller than your dick (hopefully). 4" is the size of the thing in length. the width isn't much bigger than a small CD. it's for the buttons and microchips. If you will use it in cold weather, or while moving (i.e. hiking, jogging), don't get it. It has horrible skip protection. What I liked though was that it played CD-RW discs and also recharged the batteries internally (2 AAA rechargables I believe). That way you save money on not having to buy a battery charger or batteries.

don vito: how did you like the nomad II mg?? i was thining of getting one of those... and they sell it on the creative website, but it's refurb'd, and everyone says creative refurbs are bad... but anyway.. so was the mg good? worth the money? my nomad II just died on me.. for no reason.. it worked in the morning.. i went to lab.. then after lab, it just didn't work.. anyway.. thanks in advance

I'm looking for a player that I can strap to my arm while I run, lift, etc. Anyone have any ideas? What's a good online site to look at personal audio stuff. Thanks guys.

It was nice, but probably not worth the $230 I paid (plus another $40 for an additional 64 MB Smartmedia and $30 for decent headphones). The ergonomics are questionable - you really have to lock it if you intend to hold onto it while it plays, because your fingers will naturally hit the buttons. Also, the remote is an extra-cost option, it comes with dreadful headphones, and it also includes a useless little vinyl carrying case that you will never use. On the bright side, the sound is decent (though not too loud), it looks beautiful, and seems very well-built, and I also like the docking station. If I were looking for another solid-state player I would look elsewhere, though.

The Compaq PM-1 is a rebranded Napa MCD380, which is what I have, and I have no trouble recomending it to anyone looking for a nice, cheap player.

The skip protection is quite good (and yes, it IS 8 mins), the only time it failed on me is when I was running vigorously, but if you do vigorous excercise, you shouldnt even be looking at a cd/mp3 player to begin with. Its quite fine for biking, walking or a light jog. I take it to my gym and its no prob.

Is is also an advantage. Its the same thickness as ordinary cd/mp3 and cd players, but much smaller. Fits in my shirt pocket without a prob.

Dave, try the Nike "Play" branded Rios, I believe they can be strapped on.

What were you using it for? I have read its skip protection is decent but have not tried one myself.

Thanks Virge. Waiting for someone to comment on the "strapped on" part.

MUHUHAHAHAHA! Well, since we are still in a "don't ask, don't tell, don't harass" regime, I felt it was better to leave this sensitive matter private. If you choose to work out with a strap-on, far be it from me to judge you.

Jogging and sprints is where it was bad. Also while hiking, if I jumped down like 5 feet or so, it would stop playing, and by that, I mean it didn't just skip, but it couldn't read data anymore. CD still spun and all, but wouldn't start playing again until I stopped moving and watied 30 seconds or so. That quickly got returned to the store.

you see, that's true for any cd/mp3 player.

even if it has 64 ram, it still needs to read from the disc. and if you are moving vigorously ALL THE TIME, then it will never get the chance to read the disc and fill its ram. And that's true for any cd/mp3 player, not the PM-1.

<< wow the The 128MB MPIO-DMK is awesome... but its alittle price $209 maybe when i save up alittle money.. i'll get the DMK >>

I just ordered one. Thanks for the hint.
