Hey all,

Im going to be in Hong Kong in a couple of days, and am looking for a a good Non-SLR for my father.

He has been in the multimedia industry for 30 odd years, and is currently shooting with a Nikon D2X. Now, he feels carrying around a SLR is getting a bit much for short quick trips. (Also wants it for basic nightlife, and other quick pics - Will be carrying it on him 24/7)

Now, I know you cant even compare an SLR with a decent lense to a point and shoot, but what would you guys recommend as good non-SLR in the price range below $950?

Ive been looking around briefly and have seen allot of people mentioning the Fuji film finepix f50fd? Would the Leica D-lux 3 be a good bet?

Thanks for your help,

Ryan

The Canon G9 is a very good prosumer point and shoot, with nearly all the controls that a dSLR has. However, since your dad likes Nikon, it would be a totally different layout to learn.

From my research, the Canon SD870IS is one of the best pocket cameras out there. I just picked up one for my mother for Christmas. I'll know how it works in a few days.

Speaking from personal experience, I lost my DSLR on a trip to Greece and Italy and had to acquire a "fill-in." The Canon S3-IS with a 12X zoom and near SLR features (electronic viewfinder that sees what the lens sees) and a moveable LCD really mader it useful. It is compact and easy to use with one hand. The current model is the S5 IS - a slightly larger LCD, but the same 12X zoom. Very useful to someone used to working with a DSLR. The price is also friendly - less than $400. It runs on two AA cells and uses SD media.

i'm not sure about hong kong, but i've never found consumer electronics prices in the parts of asia that i've been to to be particularly good compared to US prices. at least for name brand stuff. no-name rip offs are cheap, of course, but you get what you pay for.

When ever we go one a road trip with him he will bring the G9 and he loves it!

My mom is thinking of getting the G9 for my grandmother next time we go to India
