Hey, it's been a while since I played any new PC games, and was just wondering if anybody has any suggestions of what I should get. I like FPS games, but I've never really been able to get into anything like Elder Scrolls. Any thoughts? Thanks

Funny; I was going to start the same thread. :)

I am an FPS'er first and foremost, but since I enjoyed Diablo (you get "upgrade" points and you upgrade specific skills/abilities) I decided to give Oblivion a shot.

I love it!! You can literally play it for months if you wanted to. You do need a decent system to run it properly, however.

Dark Messiah Might & Magic is another very good game. It's more like an FPS with some Role Playing in it. Oblivion and DMMM are similar in that they are very FPS-like, but Oblivion has a wide-open storyline (you can follow the main quest or simply ignore it) but DMMM is very linear. Each level has a clear objective and you really can't explore the world too much like you can w/Oblivion.

Have you played FEAR or Quake 4? Both are super excellent shooters.

I'll be watching this thread for recommendations for myself. :) There are some good games coming in the next few months, but I want to get something now.

I was looking at FEAR today at Wal-Mart and was SO close to buying it, but wanted to get some recommendations first. I'll look at Quake 4 too.

Battlefield 2 for $19.99 is a pretty good deal. You can also get it for $5 off with a coupon at Best Buy.

I agree! I'm not much for the online aspect of games; not enough time for that and I usually get owned. I much prefer single player, and BF2 has plenty of that.

Any other "war type FPS games?" Like the Medal of Honor series?

seconded

1. Oblivion
2. DM M&M
3. Q4
4. FEAR and it's [unpatched] x-pack

once Gothic3 is *patched*, i will recommend it also as better than Oblivion [the Story disappoints in the End] with better combat ... also with 100 hours+ of gameplay

. . . and if you LOVE First Person Shooters and have the rig to show it off, PREY is awesome ... and makes the *best* usage of the D3 Engine - yet. Portals are cool also,

put it at the TOP of the list [for FPSers]
for FPSers:

1. PREY
2. Q4
3. FEAR and it's [unpatched] x-pack

then the hybreds

4. DM M&M [FPS hybred *like* DE]
5. Gothic 3 [after patching]
6. Oblivion

Think I'm gonna pick up FEAR. When I beat it, I'll probably move on to some of your other suggestions. Thanks.

FEAR is ok, but it can be frustrating. I ran at a guy shooting bullets big enough to take your arm off, and ran out of ammo just as I reached him where I proceeded to whack him in the face with the blunt end of my gun repeatedly until he bitch slapped me into oblivion. I never played FEAR again.

Battlefield can be fun as long as it doesn't completely obliterate your system. Every single game DICE has made has been a resource hog, and the latest one simply will not stay stable on my machine.

Farcry... well the only bad thing about Farcry is Ubisofts half-assed attempt at functional multiplayer. The single-player is easily one of the best ever, the graphics are fantastic, and the game is just plain great.

The only other game I can suggest is the recent Rainbow Six: Vegas which I find good in single-player and multiplayer, although I play on the Xbox360 myself.

Ditch FEAR and get COD2, much better game and the COD2 multiplayer is approximately 1,000 times better than FEAR's which is about as fun as a trip to the dentist.

Between this and Keith's replies, I'm leaning towards COD2 now. I just read some stuff and it looks pretty good. I want something with good multiplayer, and a war game probably has just that.

i found that COD2 was the same thing over and over.. your buddies just had different accents. once the novelty of the AI companions wore off, the game got real old real quick, i thought

Probably a good choice, forgot to mention it. I have CoD2 too, it's a fantastic game in all respects.

I really enjoyed it, lots of good action. I actually played through it twice in short succession. The thing that makes it though is the multiplayer which is great IMO and is head and shoulders above FEAR's.

I hate to bring a dead thread to life, but I thought those that helped me deserved to know that I just ordered COD2 from Best Buy the other day. It should get here Tuesday. Thanks for your help, it looks like pretty much the kind of game I was looking for.
