Looking for a good dvd/cd burner

I've noticed that the prices on dvd/cd burners are dropping lately. I found one from gearxs for about 70 bucks and it seems to do what I would want. I'm looking for dvd+r/-r/+rw/-rw and dual layer compatibility, and cd +r/-r/+rw/-rw. Here's the one I found: http://www.gearxs.com/gearxs/p...o.php?products_id=3485
Is that a good one? Is there something better for the price?

any particular model or site where I should look for the best price? Also, I'd like the retail version if at all possible.

cheapest nec retail version I found on pricewatch was 107...I'm hoping for more around the 70 dollar range, and I've had good experience with liteon drives. I'm using one in my system now

The NEC-3500A/3520 are both under 70 and considered the best all around DVD burners. Shop newegg. You don't need retail.

There are OEM versions that include software, so all that you're missing is a bag of screws, a cable and 2 blank discs. You can also buy OEM software at the same time as a bare drive, at least at mwave.com (haven't checked newegg.com recently).

newegg only has the 3520A, but they only have oem...why don't they carry retail versions of this drive?

oem doesn't always come with the same warranty as retail, either...i can get a liteon retail drive for the same price as the nec oem drive from newegg, and i don't think newegg offers software with their oem drives.

Sorry for getting cranky, it's been a long week.

Newegg doesn't make it easy since if you miss that "w/software" part the descriptions are the same and you'd never guess. You have to look at the pictures to even find out what software you get.

Tough choice, I'd much rather have Nero than Roxio, so the Liteon is way ahead on that score.

The NEC is supposed to be better hardware, but people seem happy with the Liteon.

So if you don't want to buy any other software, you probably should go ahead and get the Liteon.

I usually use a program called padus disc juggler anyway, so I'm not even sure if the software is an issue, but I don't know if padus (the free version, anyway) can handle dvd's.

found out that padus dj can handle dvd's, but the free version can only burn at lowest possible speed and a max of 700MB per session, so this kinda makes dvd burning useless...i may have to look into the purchased version...it's 70 bucks, but it's a great program. Anyway, I think the roxio software that comes with the NEC should do me just fine for dvd burning, and i'd use dj, musicmatch, and windows burn features for everything else.

I really like LG drives, have one myself & used in three other machines. They're whisper quiet and support dvd-ram disks.

I'm not farmiliar with LG....cubby, can you give me a link so I can check it out. He also brings up a good point...the loudest thing in my case right now is my dvd drive....how loud is the NEC?
