Looking for a good display under $500

Looking to get a new monitor for my new rig (P4 3Ghz, ATI 9800 Pro) and looking to spend no more than $500, preferably lower.

My main question is LCD vs CRT. I'm using this primarily for gaming purposes and have heard the LCD's can have some problems. Is this true? What would people recommend as a good display (LCD or CRT) for a gaming rig?

Gaming? No question - a CRT. LCDs can come close, but nothing on the market compares to the brightness, contrast, and blazing response time of a CRT.

Get a 19" that can handle 1600x1200@85Hz, and you'll be in gaming bliss.

For gaming, IMO I would go with a NEC or Sony CRT. The diamontron and trinitron tubes have the most vibrant color and brightness with decent text. I personally have the NEC MultiSync FE991 SB which was 269. You cant go wrong with NEC or Sony in monitors.

For CRTs I love the Samsung and Hitachi's. I think there was a deal recently for the 955DF? You probably won't be spending over $250...

I've got a Samsung SyncMaster 950b 19" CRT for $175... that's certainly well within your budget 😉 . It works great but isn't the absolute best, so I'd recommend maybe the 955DF, or if you don't want Samsung, a Mitsubishi/NEC.
