Something I can pick up locally. Tonight.

Update:

I went to Radioshack and BestBuy, picked up an antenna from each.

The $30 antenna from Radioshack picked up CBS, WB, and ABC in HD, as well as a few other HD channels. There was also a bunch of non HD channels. All in all, I got 47 channels.

The $70 antenna from BestBuy got half those channels, and didn't get ABC HD.

Peeps here have made their own, out of fiddy cent worth of materials, that apparently work really well.

Just use our world class "fusetalk search (and destroy) function" and enjoy!

Hmm, I think I'll just go to WorstBuy and buy a few to ensure I get somewhat of a signal.

Got a pair of rabbit ears that came with an old tv? I can get 90%+ of all the area channels with those here.

MOST digital TV signals are being broadcast in the UHF range (Channels 14 - 69), so any good UHF antenna does the job. Depends a lot on how far you are from the transmission tower. Some digital signals are being done in the old VHF Hi range (Channels 7 - 13) and pure UHF antennas are not so good here, but may be OK. Rabbit ears probably will work for some of these. Very few digital has returned to the VHF Lo range (Channels 2 - 6), but check the details in your area. If you need that range, you really do need something for VHF Lo. Rabbit ears work here, but there are better if you have weak channels to pick up.

All the hype on "digital antennas" is actually about UHF antennas. The simpler ones are small and can be made a little attractive for indoor mounting, so they are easy to sell. And if you're close to the tower and there are only UHF digital channels where you are, they can do the job. Just don't get duped into paying big bucks for "digital"!

Digital is just a buzzword to make electronics sound fancier. It's rarely used correctly. I remember watching an old sci-fi show where they were touting the newest and greatest "transistor power supply" because transistor this and that was the next big thing. :)

WOW 47 channels?!? Thats a heck of a lot of free channels. I'm using a Philips Mant510 amplified antenna that I got at Lowe's on clearance for $12. It does a pretty good job at pulling in UHF channels but I can't get my local FOX station which broadcasts in VHF-Hi. I think I'm going to add a Kitztech amp and see if that helps

You must live in NYC or something to get that many.

I built a little coathanger antenna which works well, but there's not much around here in terms of HD broadcasts, so I broke down and bought the cable box.

Wow, I thought it was good when the third channel came in at my parent's house growing up. They had a tower on the roof, too.

Okay correction, I got 47 channels, but not all of them are US channels. Some of them are Latino, some of them are Asian. I already took it off but if I were to guess how many channels were actually "watchable", I'd say 15-20.
