Looking for a good cordless drill

I need a really good cordless drill. A powerful one, and one that will last, because it will be used and abused as much a any power tool has ever been. I'm thinking 18V bare minimum. I'd go higher, but i think that would be a little to expensive. The cheapest 18V i could find was a DeWalt for $300CDN / $200USD. Linky. So what are everyones' thoughts? How are DeWalt drills in general?

I've had a Dewalt 18v for about 3 years now (used heavly), Its a great drill. Its has plenty of power, and has standed up to lots of abuse... The only thing that has happened to it is the original battery no longer keeps a charge.

DeWalt = indestructable. Try to get the ones with the metal collar, as they seem to last longer. having worked in Home depot, I believe I am qualifed to let you know that DeWalt = the best for the $.

I like my Makita 3/8 and my Porter-Cable 1/2. For my uses, I haven't been disappointed with 14.4. Though if I'd had more money to blow, bigger's always better right!?

My Brother has Dewalt's. They're all good though I prefer the power of the Porter-Cable.

My dad is a hotel manager and they bought a couple of dewalts when they remodeled the hotel, they went through rough commerical use every day for like a year and half and still work great and the battreys are still good as new. I would really reccomend these, also Makita (sp?) they make great power tools as well.

i need one too!

people say Old Milwaukee is the mercedes of drills. Dewalt has a great reputation too, but its out of my budget.

I'm considering a 18v Ryobi. you can get that with saw and i think flashlight for like 200. 🙂 Home Depot.

Potel?

😉

The Sears Craftsman is decent. Especially that from my experience it's heavily discounted most of the time. I'd maybe look at Dewalt or any of the other premium brands if you are really going to abuse it (don't know what "abuse" in your definition means) as being a decent investment. However, i've priced out some Dewalts going for same voltage rating with the Sears stuff and it can be almost 2x as much for the Dewalt. It's your call.

In any case, Sears has a good warranty I believe and if you think the Sears stuff sucks you can probably return it or exchange for another one.

Actually, i just realized that this drill is a 3/8, and i think i need a 1/2. A DeWalt 18V 1/2 costs $450!
Hey, they produce 37lb-ft of torque! 🙂

^un-geared - i.e. straight from motor

Few months ago I was in the same situation. I was looking at DeWalt (the best) for $150 and Sears (good) for $35. Since this is just for home use, I end up with Sears brand. $35 was suppose for 13.2v power drill, but they are out of stock. Next step up is 14.4v. They are also out too. End up I got 15.6v for the price of 13.2v. I won't complain.

In your case, you might want to go for DeWalt. They are the best even thou they cost more. It's a good investment. 🙂

I went with a Sears 3/8" 19.2 volt last summer for about $150 I believe. My requirements were a fast charger, and two batteries if possible. This 19.2 volt drill came with a case and a shop light that uses the same batteries. It has two batteries and the charger only takes 1 hour. It was the best deal that I could get, and I'm very happy with it!

dewalt drills are overpriced. however, they are perfect for professionals who use these on a daily basis. it's too expensive for hobby ppl and minor fixer-uppers. i would recommend sears professional drills, they are nice, not as good as dewalts (many similarities). i have a regular sears drill myself, it's 16.8 that they had for clearance\closeout or whatever. it's a bit heavy for certain tasks, but the power is nice. black and deckers are pretty much for ppl that dont plan on using them too much, imo. note that many of these drills are made in the same factory.

Just like everyone else says:

My uncle builds houses and has about two of every tool:

When it comes to power tools he doesn't buy:
Crap and Decker
Off brand
(some items like saws he will use craftsman)

He does buy:
Dewalt
Porter Cable
Makita

I've got a 14.4 Makita and a Crap and Decker with the tube-like rechargeable batteries which are interchangeable with their general household stuff like dustbusters, and cordless screw drivers.......

Another item that more expensive drills give you are adjustable torque----sort of like a torque wrench....really good for a stripped screw that you don't want to strip further but want to remove for exampe....as welll as a clutch mechanism to stop the spin as soon as you release the trigger.

The crap and decker works fine---and i use it occassionally----but the Makita----like the Dewalt, and like the Porter Cable----is better without a doubt.
