i work partially from home and i need a good headset to take calls over my computer (skype probably). i know plantronics does this well but i dont know what version to get, and my searches all come up with "gaming headsets" which i don't necessarily need to place much emphasis on.

my computer doesn't have bluetooth, so i guess this would all be via line-in/mic-in ... i don't even know how that all works tbh...

anyone have any recommendations?

and btw, i don't want to spend too much. i want something practical, but i know how expensive plantronics headsets can be.

tia!

i can't tell if the earpiece is foam or that rubbery material. i prefer the foamy stuff... more comfy for me... i found an ebay auction with images of both kinds so i really don't know what to assess from that. what kind of ear cushioning did yours come with?

I'm 99% sure it's rubbery and most headsets in this price range (> $40) are also rubbery.

I would recommend visiting the AT Vent server when userman is on. AFAIK he's using an ordinary headset (not even USB) but he always comes in crystal clear. You don't need a headset to join Vent, you can lurk with speakers/headphones.

$20 headset with foamy ear muffs might work.

If you prefer using your sound plugins, Sennheiser PC130's.
If you want to try out USB, plantronics DSP-500...

I do not recommend the plantronics audio .90..
They broke on me three times, I gave up after the third. I bought a sennheiser pc130 headset after, very happy with it.

Awesome reviews, I think I've found my next headset, thanks :)

Sennheiser PC150's work well too ya know ;)...
Comfy comfy...

Too comfy.
Only issue with Pc150's as well as many other headsets, is the volume control. Over time, the wire will screw itself up somehow, and therefore... solder it back... Or you leave your volume control in one spot and don't move it.

That's what I used in the ventrilo server ;).

The PC130's seem hard to find at local stores, I checked BB, CC, Staples, OD, and OM.

Any idea what the differences are between the 150 and 130?

I have the 150, and while its nice it can be a bit tight. It will tend to feel uncomfortable after about 4 or 5 hours, although that could be my head/ear shape. (It's not tight due to lack of use, I wore it 10+ hrs a week for a year and a half when I played WoW).

From a visual perspective...

-Different construction, the part for adjusting head in the PC130 is near the top, PC150's are near the drivers.
-Different pads are used. The Pc150 pads use ear cushions that are different, not sure about the PC130 pads.
-Comfy cushion on top of the headset for PC150.
-Microphone construction seems the same.

But from what I have noticed... the PC130 and PC150's are now outdated. the PC151 and PC131 have now taken their place. They are now steered more towards gaming?... lol.

Edit: By Looking at the fact sheet, the PC151 are rated from 18-22000 Hz while the PC131's are rated 30-18000 Hz... Different drivers?

Since I'm not an audiopfile, sound quality isn't of paramount importance to me.

Quality construction is definitely important.

The PC150 is pretty flexible... I've stepped on it, it bends, then bends back... Dropped it several times... Still good :)...

Roger that RossMAN.

It depends on what mood im in. I have two headsets one is an labtec axis-502. The other is an plantronics ? I have no idea on the model but I found it in an old box I had in storage and found that the mic and left ear peice was bad. So I soldered the internals from and even older boom mic onto the headset and picked up and generic ear piece from radio shack.

:)

Regarding the Sennheiser PC 130, can someone here who has them answer a question for me? Is it possible to separate the mic/headphones wires from one another?

My setup is in a way where my headphones are plugged in through my speakers on the right side of my desk, yet my mic is plugged into my actual sound card which is in my case on the left side of my desk. I need to be able to separate the wires about 4 feet from one another. Thanks!

Couldn't you just get an extension cable for the microphone?

Of course I could. I would just prefer not to use one if possible. Anyone know if what I'm asking is possible with the PC130? Thanks!
