Looking for a gaming laptop - Custom build or pre-built?

My old laptop is from 2007 and isn't really good for much anymore past looking up information when my PC dies or when I go out of state. Since my girlfriend is getting into gaming more and more, I'd like to have a decent gaming laptop at my disposal so I don't have to buy a second set of peripherals for my old gaming rig. I could always do that and I'm still thinking about it, but I'd like to do some pricing on gaming laptops first. I'd also like to hear from the professionals whether or not it would be best to buy a pre-built laptop or do a custom build. I know from experience that custom builds on laptops are usually more expensive and I honestly have never taken a laptop apart, so I'm leaning towards a pre-built.

I found a Lenovo Y series a few years ago that wasn't too expensive (~$800) but I wasn't really in the market for one at that time.

My budget could be extended up to $1,500 if necessary, but I should note a few things:

I'm not looking for top-of-the-line here. Just something that will play most newer games at a decent setting (mostly high at native resolution). I also require Windows 7. If the laptop has Windows 8 or 8.1, I will not even consider it.

Thanks for all suggestions in advance.

I'm pretty happy with the sager 7335 I snagged off ebay, upgraded ram/ssd and it's perfect for gaming when I get the chance, can be easily upgraded / worked on (a major plus if you're going warranty-free), and didn't break the bank.
