Looking for a game like Space Hulk, or Rainbow 6.

Space Hulk and Rainbow 6 might not be something you put together in a sentence, but I enjoyed those games for similar reasons way back then.

I played Space Hulk on 3DO, and what I liked about the game is how you can place guys on the map strategically and protect your passage from point A to B. You go over there, cover this direction. That sort of thing. The action itself was 2ndary in a way, and I was ok with that. Planning was more important to the success of finishing the map.

The older Rainbow 6 games took planning to even higher level, it was even possible to just plan the attach and let the AI execute your plan. The AI was definitely not perfect back then, but the ability to plan every aspect of breaching the buildings really got me excited back then.

I'm playing Mass Effect 2 right now, and I like the ability to tell my 2 teammates to go here and there, but it seems limiting. It could be because we don't get overhead view of the map, or the map itself is not laid out to be played in such a strategic way.

Anyways, do you guys have any recommendations for a shooter type game with some level of strategic planning of your teammates, or "on the fly" ability to command your guys based on your surrounding?

It's not as high-level as the older Rainbow 6 games, but there was a WW2 series by Ubisoft which started on the Unreal 2 engine that I can't for the life of me remember the name of, although I'm sure Band or Brother was in the title somewhere.

You could order your squadmates around on the fly, tell them to flank etc while you attacked head on.
Not as in depth as Rainbow 6, more similar to Mass Effect from what I remember of playing both. It was intended to be played in a strategic way through from what I remember, more than Mass Effect.

There was a series of games, but I can't remember what the title was, so maybe someone else will know what I mean!

You're talking about brothers in arms.

My suggestion would be to play the 8 or so other Rainbow Six games that came out after R6 if you want that type of gameplay.

I think Rainbow Six 3 and onward ditched the whole tactical aspect and went for more action geared gameplay.

I loved the old Rainbow Six games though. I wish a developer would make more like it. Run and gun games are so run of the mill and boring these days.

Space Hulk was awesome back in it's day. Wish they'd come out with a remake.

I never got into Rainbow Six because of my induction into CS around that time.

Space Hulk... I was young when that was around and really didn't get the 'huh I have 4 different people *rawr* oh 3 people.... Now I'm the only one left'. I didn't have the multitasking skills.

As far as these types of games go I think it's a dead or on hold. With games more geared towards action and a fast pace, certain tactical genres have went MIA.

Space Hulk I can't see being remade for some time. As a Warhammer 40,000 based game, Relic are forging ahead with the very successful Dawn of War RTS series' and Space Marine which is a PS3/XBox 360, third person 'squad based' game.

I just read a couple of reviews of the Brothers in Arms series. It looks like what I'm looking for, as far as "on the fly" command of squad mate goes. I was stuck on MMOs back in 05, so I completely missed this series.

I'll definitely give this game a try since it's so cheap now. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks!

Just a thought...

It is quite simplistic but Star Wars: Republic Commando might give you the squad command you desire. A very fun and enjoyable (read: a good Star Wars game) game which is worth anyones money.

There was a project for a similar game to Space Hulk... but it fell apart or something. Long story, short, it got renamed to Alien Assault and released for free. It's all top-down TB stuff though, more in common with the board game.

It was pretty fun. Keep in mind that it does start out kind of slow and seems a little boring, but it gets pretty intense later on. Especially when you get to command a vehicle within your squad.

You said you wanted rainbow six so I would recommend.

Rogue Spear
Urban Operations
Raven Shield
Rainbow Six Vegas 1 & 2

Even splinter cell games really get your methodical tactician brain cells working. Thought they stealth games.

space hulk was fun as hell... When you are a kid switching between that mechwarrior 1 and x-wing was heaven.

yeah the newer R6 games are still fun. I was addicted to R6 back in the day too, spent 12+ hours a day playing that game. The ghost recon series is also good.

There was a game like R6, forgot the name, Dragon Operation Rising or something, more like Ghost Recon actually.
