Space Hulk and Rainbow 6 might not be something you put together in a sentence, but I enjoyed those games for similar reasons way back then.
I played Space Hulk on 3DO, and what I liked about the game is how you can place guys on the map strategically and protect your passage from point A to B. You go over there, cover this direction. That sort of thing. The action itself was 2ndary in a way, and I was ok with that. Planning was more important to the success of finishing the map.
The older Rainbow 6 games took planning to even higher level, it was even possible to just plan the attach and let the AI execute your plan. The AI was definitely not perfect back then, but the ability to plan every aspect of breaching the buildings really got me excited back then.
I'm playing Mass Effect 2 right now, and I like the ability to tell my 2 teammates to go here and there, but it seems limiting. It could be because we don't get overhead view of the map, or the map itself is not laid out to be played in such a strategic way.
Anyways, do you guys have any recommendations for a shooter type game with some level of strategic planning of your teammates, or "on the fly" ability to command your guys based on your surrounding?
