I remember seeing a widget of some kind that lets you be connected to the Internet via dial-up but talk on the phone at the same time - do they make it, or is my memory playing tricks on me? I did some searches but haven't found anything yet. I'm using cable, but my girlfriend still has dial-up, and being able to use the phone AND the Internet would be a useful thing for her. Any ideas?

I know what your talking about, i remember they didn't allow you to use the internet + phone at the same time, it would hold your net connection for a few minutes while you picked up the phone or something of the like.

Your phone company sells this. It's called...

a second line.

The device you're hoping for likely puts a twist on call waiting. I think AOL also markets something along these lines.

Yep, found this in a description of v.92 capabilities:

Experience V.92 features that work with V.92 service from your ISP

Modem-on-hold works with your Call Waiting service to let you pause your Internet connection and place or receive phone calls without losing your connection

The problem is that many ISPs for dial up never got past V90 support. My old ISP didn't go to V92. The other option is a box by Emerson which gets you about 30 seconds to talk while holding the line open. I've seen them in BJs and I'm sure they are out on the WWW. Your best bet is broadband or a second line.
