Zone alarm is habitually forcing a reinstall of the entire OS, so I will not be using it for Server 2003 again (don't ask why I'm using 2003 :)). I was using comodo for months happily until a patch I just installed now says it doesn't suppor this OS, so that program is garbage. The windows built in firewall doesn't work well, as it seems to allow everything and not request permission for program access. What's another good one? I really liked comodo until they put that stupid check in. Thanks!

Maybe you can elaborate on what your previous firewalls did well, and go from there?

Server 2003 Firewall works, and how well it works is a relative term.

Zone alarm and comodo default to no internet activity at all. If any is asked for, thye let it through. I Just trid the windows one on 2003 and it let grabit to my newsgroup server without asking. It's possible I let it do this before, but I really don't recall doing that and don't believe it was me, since I installed this OS not long ago! I just need to be sure that nothing is getting through without my blessing first. I like how the other programs let me do a one-time access, too, whereas windows firewall appears either allowed or not allowed with subsequent requests taking the setting they were given before...

The firewall market is now changing significantly, raising the bar, by including HIPS and other process controls to the definitions of what firewalls are expected to do. The trend of the future especially if one is willing to include also freeware to the term overall firewall market. The preventions previous available only to the more computer security aware are now being added to firewalls is the bottom line. With the two currently available pioneers being online armor and comodo with its brand new CPF3 version.

Right now, comodo version three supports only win XP and vista with 32 bit and 64 bit versions versions available for each. Online armor supports win XP and still supports win 2000 that CPF3 has cut adrift. I am not sure if online armor free or paid supports server 2003 OS, but online armor still does not work with vista.

So anyone looking to switch firewalls now, will find the firewall market in a state of too early to tell yet rapid flux. Some user research advised. I too am confused.
