I want to find a new primary display, as I would love to have some 1600x1200 action.

I was going to look into the NEC FP955, HOWEVER, I have heard it has a few problems. I need a monitor that will last, has a nice clear picture (preferably .25mm dot pitch) and good colors. Trinitrons and Diamondtrons were going to be my first choice, but shadow masks have better color, don't they?

Please post what you think I should look into, I, again, want a long lasting monitor, with good performance..

Please post any ideas you have! :)

Thanks,
Sean

Dude, 19" monitor at 1600x1200? Are you nuts? Or do you really like squinting?

Do yourself a favor. Get a 21" monitor if you are going to run at 1600x1200. Even on my 21", a resolution that high makes everything kinda squished.

If you really want alot of real estate, get two monitors for a dual monitor setup. Works great for me as I use my 18" LCD (1280x1024) for reading and working while the CRT is used for watching movies, gaming, etc.

Sony CPD-G420. It can do 1600 x 1200 x 85 Hz plus the screen is totally flat.

I have one and it's an awesome piece of equipment. The colours are great and the text is razor sharp.

I do it all the time. I run my desktop and any 3D games running fast enough at 1600 x 1200.

Actually, I don't need to squint with a 1600x1200 resolution. And, I WILL be doing dual monitor. :D of course, my current one only does 1600x1200 at 70hz, so I think I'll run this one at 1280x960 and the new one at 1600x1200.. :)

I have found out about the Samsung 900NF. I have read a few reviews on it, and it is doing good. It also has the 5 BNC connectors (like the G420 and the Flatron I think) which I will be taking advantage of if I need too.

However, I went to Best Buy today, and saw their 19" Sony Trinitron. All I can say is.. WOW. VERY clear.. Of course, the onboard video couldn't get the refresh rate up past 60hz, but I think the monitor was capable of more. (I'm not sure if it was the G420 or something else. it was being sold with some cheap VAIO set..)

Well, anyway, one other feature I am interested in are the BNC connections. The FP955 has totally left my mind now, because it is more expensive and may have a few problems, but you never know.

Thanks for all the suggestions, keep em' coming! :D

SeanH, exactly what kind of problems does the FP955 experience. I was going to pick one up at the beginning of July...but now, I'm kind of nervous.

Well, I didn't experience the problems first-hand. But I read that people have experienced problems with the screen loosing its crispness weeks after purchase. I couldn't find a review on the monitor anywhere, but off of ZDNet consumers gave thumbs down for 12/14 people. 2 with thumbs up. I don't know if ZDNet is good to go by, but their consumers.. But, I think it always depends..

I'm not sure. Did you find a review?

Also, if you are picking it up, and its returnable, I would go ahead a give it a try. I would love to get the monitor, but due to consumers' bad reviews, and not wanting to pay $40 to ship if its defective, I'd prefer to go with something that suposedly isn't prone to problems. :D

I just purchased a IBM P96 19" Sony Trinitron FD Flat Screen monitor direct from IBM off their ebayy store for $255 shipped. The picture quality is identical to the Sony G420--it's perfect. I think the Trinitron-based monitors are the best--very sharp text and superb color. The Diamondtrons aren't as sharp and clear. I bought a 19" flat Viewsonic briefly and brought it back because I wasn't satisfied with the picture.

Anyways, the IBM P96 is a great deal--it will do 1600x1200 at 85hz. I play games at that resolution and it looks great. Text is a bit small for my eyes at that resolution, but that's subjective, I guess. Sonys are great monitors as well--the G420 will do 1600x1200 at 85hz too. But it's a bit overpriced (around $400). The IBM is the exact same monitor, it just doesn't have the Sony logo on it.

I would stick with Trinitron monitors, myself.

I love my Sony CPD-G400. I think I paid a little over $500 shipped a couple years ago, but it was well worth it. I haven't seen anything better imo.

I just want to second that; I have a Sony CPD-G420 too, and it's utterly gorgeous @ 1600x1200x85Hz... by far the best CRT monitor I've ever seen.

Can you run yours at 85 Hz ok? When I run my G400 at 1600x1200 at 85 Hz I get a weird rippling distortion. It also happens at a lower resolution (I think 1240x960) at 85 Hz. Yet if I lower it to 80 Hz or 75 Hz it's fine.

Mine doesn't have that problem. It's got a 3-year warranty; sounds like you might want to exercise that.

I don't think I'm going to send it back yet since that's the only problem. If it starts affecting other refresh rates then I'll RMA it.
