I'm thinking of getting a BookPC setup that will only have room for 1 internal hard drive, but it will come with 2 firewire ports integrated. I have an extra 45 gig / 5400 rpm ide drive that I wanted to put in an external firewire enclosure. I've done a bit of research online, and there seem to be many products available. Basically, I'm looking for the smallest possible unit to accomodate the hard drive. This setup will eventually attach to a laptop as well, so small size is a must.
I noticed that the enclosures for 2.5" drives can draw power from the firewire bus. Will any of the enclosures designed for 3.5" drives also draw power from the bus?
My final question is about speed. Some of the specs on a couple of sites said that the max throughput is capped at ~ 13 MB/s. Can anyone confirm that? I don't really see how that can be true if people are using these things for DV editing...
Thanks for any input.
