First of all, I'm looking for a new dvd-rom, so I could use some suggestions there. Secondly, is there any real difference between slot and tray load drives, other than just personal preference? I was looking at the pioneer drives, and the slot loads come with a digital out, but the trays don't.

Get either a Toshiba or Pioneer, both seem to be real good. And yes, slot vs tray is just a matter of personal preference.

I thought both Pioneer flavors had digital out. Are you sure you were comparing like models?

Slot-in drives are easier to load but louder when reading discs than the standard tray ones.
And, also there is a "amaze your friends factor" with the tray-drives. At least with mine, many of ´em thought it was cool when the disc suddenly was sucked up by the drive.

I have the pionner slot and I'm sure the digital out doesn't function, Would get no CD audio util I selected use digital out in the device manager, which uses the pci bus and NOT the internal digital cable. Using Win2k/Santa Cruz
