I'm building a computer for my sister to take to college. She doesn't need a top of the line machine.
I was planning on using a Duron 800 processor.
In order to keep costs down and keep it simple, I was hoping I could find a decent cheap board that has integrated audio and video. But also has the ability to be upgraded later.
That new Sis730s chipset I've been reading about sounds cool but I can't find a motherboard that uses it.

Any motherboard suggestions or general budgent computer suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

The ECS K7VZA comes with on board audio and is available with a 700 Duron + heat sink + fan for $137 from Micropro.com - go to Pricewatch - Motherboard Combos - by Brand (ECS) - this is a very good board for the money - I just built my wife a system with this board from Micropro - got it in 2 days - it works great - you can call micropro and order this (mention the Pricewatch price) or order online by going thru Pricewatch; You will have to find a cheap video card (look on the For Sale/Trade Forum)

The ECS K7VMA has onboard sound and video (up to 32MB shared)- I don't think Micropro carries this, but CPU Solutions (cpusolutions.com) has one with a 700 Duron for $170 . I have not ordered from them, so I'm not sure of their reputation. I just bought one of these boards today from a local supplier - I'm going to build a Duron PC for my parents.

The ECS boards have gotten a pretty good review from a few sites (Tom's Hardware is one). They are easy to setup and the installation manual is well written.

Both of these boards are upgradable - they have AGP slots

Again, go to pricewatch.com and look at Motherboard Combos by brand - hope this helps

you might want to go to www.pricewatch.com

although ive never used it, you might want to look into the via km133 chipset, from what i understand they have both integrated sound and video

hehehe, but you mentioned wanting to be able to upgrade it in the future, and its kinda hard to upgrade integrated systems

Can anyone suggest a decent board with the km133 chipset?

By upgrade, I mean I'd like a integrated a/v board that I can put in a nicer agp video card and maybe one of those new athlon-c processors later on.

Any other suggestions about building budget computers are welcome as well.
Thanks

The ECS K7VMA that I mentioned above has integrated video and an AGP slot - in case you want to add your own video card later. You can always upgrade this to 1.2 GB Tbird later on. It is not overclocker friendly, but it's an OK board for what you are trying to accomplish.

The only SiS 730S mainboard currently available is the PC-Chips M810LR. Has VGA, audio, modem riser, and 10/100 LAN included, is microATX and takes any Athlon or Duron.

From user reports, it's working fine, and the price can't be beaten - it's $99 or so.

(Edit: Oh, and there is an AGP slot for later upgrades as well. Pitfall: M810LR seems to come in two flavors, w/ and w/o the AGP slot. Make sure you get the former.)

Regards, Peter

I got a PC chips 810lmr for $79 from some place off pricewatch, it's working perfectly with my duron 800 and has the AGP slot.
