I have my main HDD for vista/storage and a spare 500GB WD Caviar that I want to wipe out so the data is irrecoverable before I sell it, I'd prefer a program that can run while in windows that way my PC isn't rendered "useless" while in Dos mode. I have used Dban before but evne quick erase took overnight and then a few more hrs, I wasn't able to use my PC for about 12 hrs while it was erasing data.

The wipe programs write to every single sector, multiple times.
A 500GB HD is pretty big, and it will take a long time no matter if it is in windows, dos, or another operating system.
There is no such thing as "quick" if you want to do a secure wipe.

I suggest Sdelete for what you want. http://technet.microsoft.com/e...nternals/bb897443.aspx

I didnt read anywhere in the article about this, but would that allow me to choose the second HDD or would it default to the main HDD and try to erase that one?

WD Lifeguard

You can install it to your primary HDD, then run it on any hooked up drive while in windows.

Use the "write zeroes to the entire disk" option to wipe.

You must specify which drive ...

Usage: sdelete [-p passes] [-s] [-q] <file or directory>
sdelete [-p passes] [-z|-c] [drive letter]
