looking for a digital camera

my mother's in the market to buy a digital camera, and i've seen several recommended here. which would you pick between these two?

Canon PowerShot A60 (or A70)
Olympus C-720

C-720 is $100 more than an a70 but has a 8x zoom. Is your mother a super photographer? Or will she just be doing snapshots?

I'm an Olympus fan myself, but if money is an issue the Canon is fine too.

Most peeps here like the Canons and Olympus. I have the Oly C-720, so that's my vote. Doesn't matter anyway--you'll just drop it into the toilet while you take a pic of your pp.

the only bad thing about olympus is the Smart Media

it doesn't get very high in storage but I do believe it's a better camera. Optical Zoom itself should be more than enough for it. Not to mention loads of features

True, Smartmedia tops out at 128MB, but that's still about 100 shots at 3MP? The thing I dislike about SM is it seems so flimsy. Very cheap though. Check Buy.com for nice prices on flash memory.

Best place to buy a Canon PowerShot A60 or A70 would be Dell.com during one of their promo's.

If you buy the Oly C-720 get it from OfficeMax.com they have a $50 off $250 coupon.

For convenience and price, I'd go with the Canon A60/70... small enough. relatively cheap (cheaper than the olympus) and still plenty of features.
I don't know if your mother would like the crazy zoom/features of the olympus.

I'm not entirely sure. It's an updated version. A60 is 2 megapixels, but A70 is 3.
They're a little smaller. I think a few problems associated with the A40 (not entirely sure which) have been fixed or improved.

A60 = 2 MPs with new digic sensor, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, longer movie mode
A70 = above and 3 MP



i have the A40 and im fiending the A70, but ill hold off for now.

Get the A70, unless you plan on using the 8x optical.

I thought the new Olys were using that XD media. It's a little smaller than Secure Digital and supports up to 1 gig. Does the 720 support that or Smart Media?
