Looking for a dialup friendly DC project

Short story is that I got 2 smoking fast computers dedicated to D projects. While I was using dsl I made it to the top 100 area of Lifemapper and top 100 area of TA F@H. I no longer needed the bandwidth, switched back to a good 56k line and despite plenty of help, I'm unable to get F@H to run w/o major connectivity problems. LM is very dialup friendly and works well, but I originally left the program because of management issues, I later thought were going to get fixed and now I'm doubting any progress will be made there. What a sad day when 2 machines are sitting here, built to help, and are doing nothing. I need a dialup friendly DC project.

lol Your right theinsen1! :D

With DPAD you run the client and it does it's calculations, then automatically uploads the file when it reaches 100kb, or you could manually send the file whenever you like. So there's nothing to download, except, if you want to enable it, a file that contains the best calculations for the day from all the users.

It's really a great project! ;)

i run dpad on 3 computers on 56k that only upload like once every couple of months. best project to run on a minimal or no connection i think.

If dial-up is the problem --> DPAD is your first choice. And Stephen Brooks, the DPAD main dude is a very friendly guy as well!

The CPDN project is one that is EXTREMELY processor and memory intensive, such that even on a decent P4 rig, a workunit can take 5 WEEKS or more to complete, so you needn't connect very often. ;)

leconc, no need to always make Lifemapper out as the worst DC project on the planet. They had problems, like all other DC projects, and they were solved. It's been a long time since there were any problems and they are even getting new funding to expend the Lifemapper Project. ;)

I say it's a GREAT project and everybody should give it a try! :D

I will check out DPAD. I didn't say LM was the worst DC project, when 50% of the users LEFT THE PROGRAM, they said it for me. The concept there is great, the administration sucks. Don't even try to support the lame communications there. They had told me they didn't know if they would continue to the end of the year, everyone blasted me as they thought it just couldn't be true. They finally admitted it. Over a month since any updates. They are making the same mistakes. F@H had excellent communications, I love the project, just won't run well on my dialup. I've got enough invested in DC only computers, made it to the LM top 100 area and would be top 20-30 if I ran it full time again, that when a program does crap like LM did, I've more than earned the right to complain.

All projects have issues, but I will speak only of those that I run or ran. F@H can be a pain on certain dialup configurations; I was lucky, but not all people are. :(

I quit DPAD a while back when all of a sudden the vast majority of my points disappeared, for no reason at all, it seemed. Luckily, not long after, F@H introduced the ability to queue up to 8 deadline-less WUs, so I didn't need the dialup-friendliness of DPAD any more. Bear in mind that that incident happened a long time ago, so I don't think you'll have trouble now, but DPAD hasn't always been perfect either. :(

Nothing against any of the DPAD TeAm members, I had fun with you guys doing what little I could to help us pass the DPC, or whoever that was who used to be #1 in that project. ;)

DPAD sounds good. If you can't wrangle that for some reason, try Seventeen or Bust... I've been running it for a year and a half on dialup without ever having an issue. The data transfer is tiny (about 200kb a month at the maximum setting) and tests can be cached locally with a proxy.

I run 6 DPAD crunchers on a shared dial-up. Max connect is usually 28.8k, and it still just takes a few minutes to dump a weeks worth of data for all six. I don't event do them sequentially, just do a manual-send, walk away, then come back 5 minutes later to check that it ran OK.

I've been on dial-up since mid-2001. So I'd like to recommend a couple more projects:

Seventeen or Bust may have the smallest total transmission of any project, probably under 1k per week for each machine. I created SBQueue to allow dial-up users to connect whenever they want.

Find a Drug is a project I've just started. Its work units don't seem too bad, and it has already proven to be successful in finding drugs.

Find a Drug is one that I looked at, but what stands out to me there is that the consulting company that runs the program sells the data and also makes money consulting. This may be all moral, but it seems like they created the project, use free computing power then make a profit selling it. No doubt they are on the payroll themselves, and since they are based overseas, no info on them nor do regulations really apply to them. I hope its a real program, but the abuse potential is too high for me there. Great concept though.
