Looking for a desktop

With at least an i5 and 8gbs of ram.
This will be used for solidworks and AutoCAD.
A Nvidia GPU would be awesome for Cuda work (dont know if SW and AutoCAD does CL work)

The best deal that I've found was a scratch and dent Dell XPS with an i7 4770, 8GB of ram, 1TB HDD and a 7570 for 650.

Just looking at the parts list that looks like a deal that can't be beaten by a DYI build.

Costs $430 for those parts alone. Add a case, mobo, PSU, and OS and you really are not saving any money.

Actually not, the pre-built PCs only carry the warranty of these PC manufacturer, in this case Dell and it's only 1 year (extendable for a fee). When you buy parts, you get more warranty, for example the i7-4770 has 3 years parts/labor warranty from Intel.

Sometimes the premium for it to just show up at your door and work is worth it. Definitely considering it after my last build was like all of the gods and all of the men invoking Murphy's Law. Sneezed and got TIM in a DIMM, power cable wasn't long enough for the case by about half an inch, some guy cut me off on the way home from Microcenter and forced me into the ezpass only lane when I dont have an ezpass ($65 maximum toll to go a few miles on the turnpike, thanks PA!), two defective video cards, the list goes on.

Makes me want to go to ibuypower or somewhere and just hand them the extra $150 next time As much fun as they are to put together, my time, money, and mental health were definitely worth more than that $150.

You dont need an 8 thread cpu for CAD. No CAD software uses more than a couple threads. It only uses serious cpu power when rendering, and for most people that part of the job is only a couple seconds. You want one thread at the maximum possible speed. So you want an overclocked haswell i5.
