Looking for a cheap laptop...

To use for keeping track of finances... maybe e-mail and web surfing when I'm away from home. Nothing special, just need something that can do the basics. Anyone know where I can find really cheap laptops? Even an old P2 450 is fine. I just want something separate from my main computer that I can rely on and never have to worry about viruses or someone else screwing it up, etc.

I'd say ebay.com, although over here in the UK I'd say the Friday-Ad (mostly national free ad paper).

Computer fairs are apparently good too, or look at financing a new Centrino ultra-thin or something 🙂
I had a play with a Samsung Centrino the other day, dear god almighty it's light! Was about 1-2cm open, and you could balance it on your middle finger. The battery added about 1/4 more weight.... nice laptop.

Anyway. Good hunting 🙂

I'd browse the Hot Deals forums for some new, cheap laptops. I wouldn't invest a couple hundred dollars into something that I can't really fix on my own unless it had a warranty.

Hmmmm... yeah... maybe I'll just save up some money and get a new on from Dell... one of their cheapest ones or somethin.

define what you mean by cheap?

I used to bottom fish computers, the upgrading always in the end killed me :-(

I did get a open box toshiba from CC this year, it was returned. I got it for under 500 with rebates

good luck

I have a great ibm laptop p133 next to me, the problem, max 40 ram, and upgrading to a larger hd, w98

o well :-(

Thanks for the info guys...

I'm looking for something around 500 Mhz... like maybe a P2 450... or up to a P3 650. Lookin for 256 MB of RAM, 10-20 GB hard drive, MUST have 10/100 and 56k modem built in. Also must have CD drive built in, don't want to mess with external... and would prefer a floppy drive built in as well. I don't like IBM's cause I don't like the dumb little button you use for the mouse... I prefer a touch pad. Things like a DVD drive or CDRW drive are just bonuses... not important in my decision making process.

I'm lookin for somethin right around $500.

I want to be able to listen to some MP3's or somethin while I'm balancing my checkbook or paying bills online or whatever... which is why I don't want something like an old Pentium 133. Maybe even a divx movie here and there if I go on a trip or somethin like that.
