Looking to turn my old machine into a HTPC as cheaply as possible. I'm planning to run linux on this system, so I'm not sure if driver support is an issue.

System Specifications:

I. Processor/CPU:
AMD 64 X2 5400+

II. Current Graphics Card:
Onboard Video

III. Display Resolution:
1080p

IV. Power Supply Unit Specification (Brand, Wattage, Ampage, Age). If possible, please provide a link to a website containing the power supply specifications:
Cheap power supply that came with the case. About 250W, it's been going on strong for 4+ years now. I might pick up one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817822006

V. Case Specifications(N/A, Model, Length, Low Profile, Cooling, HTPC, Water, Silent):
Mini ATX desktop case. I'm keeping this case, so I'm not planning on putting this into a low profile case, so standard size cards are fine.

Purchase Details:

I. Budget? Please be sure to include currency (If not USD), retailer preferences & specify whether rebates are a viable option.
Would prefer not to exceed $40, but willing to go up to $50 is necessary. I get everything from Newegg.

II. Any particular preferences (Manufacturer[nV or AMD], Brand[XFX, Sapphire, EVGA, etc], Cooling Solutions)?
No preference to brand or manufacturer. I do want a fanless card to keep it as quiet as possible.

III. Do you plan to have any Multi-GPU solutions such as Crossfire or SLI?
No

IV. Have you previously looked at a product(s) which you feel would fit your needs?
No, been out of the video card market for a while and I have absolutely no idea what cards are good.

V. What are your needs for this GPU? Which games(If any)do you intend to play? If you have this information at hand, what are the desired detail levels?
Zero gaming, only streaming video from a NAS and watching blu rays.

VI. Do you plan on overclocking the card you intend to purchase?
No

I've got an amd 5450 in an htpc made from an old computer. Works fine for playing back anything, no fan and is cheap. I just do playback on that machine.

Dunno if there's an updated version of that sort of card. Dunno if it's the best. But it's an option that seems to meet your needs.

Wait for a 6450 to go on sale for under $20AR and pick one up. There's an XFX one for $40 with a $20MIR and $3 shipping on Newegg right now, but if you can wait you could probably almost get one free. There was a thread on the Hot Deals forum a few days ago where a 5450 was $12, and $3AR.

I've got a similar CPU to yours in my HTPC and picked up a silent 4550 for about $20 AR a couple years ago.

I just saw that you plan to run linux. What software do you plan to use with it? When I was considering using linux for my htpc, some forums mentioned that certain video cards worked best with their software. Also, I think I remember reading that nvidia has better linux driver support than AMD. (disclaimer: this is going off of what I read about 2 years ago, so please don't hate me if it's wrong :))

Oh, I missed that in the OP. I don't know much about current video drivers in linux, but I do know that blu-ray under in linux is not plug-n-play. You have to jump through hoops. Windows is the only easy option for blu-ray, and even then the cost is somewhat absurd given the cost of a midrange dedicated blu-ray player ($50-$100 for player then $50-$100 for software).

Thanks for the info. I checked Newegg and they didn't have any GT430 cards in my budget. So I'm going to try a cheap HD6450. For software, I'm looking at using Linux Mint with XBMC. I hope that's a good combo since I don't know anything about Linux.

The Asus card has more memory and is likely better than 32 bit memory interface. Go with that one, or a GT430 for about $40AR.

Went ahead and got the Asus, thanks for the input. Just checked my machine, it already has a DVD drive, so I'll just stick with using Linux and watch any blue rays with my ps3. Didn't want to add on the cost of Win7 and a blu ray drive.
