I feel like I'm the classic old man in the cliche...
Now listen here, sonny, back when I was a kid we had real internet. Our ISPs had USENET, yes siree, full USENET for everyone!
Port blocking, you ask? Pshaw! We had all our ports open and we liked it that way!
IP addresses? Why we had static IP addresses, yes siree, more static than a preachers collar, and as many as we needed. Heck I had my own /24 CIDR block and I even moved it around when I changed ISPs!
Domain names? Oh yes, we had those too, except we didn't have this crippleware parked page and webmail thing you whippersnappers seem to tolerate, we had full on DNS record control, MX records, NS records, we controlled our forward and reverse lookups, we had subdomains and sub-sub domains and sub-sub-sub domains -- top that boy!
Personal servers? Oh yeah we ran those all day long... right on our public IPs..FTP, X-windows, NTP, SSH, HTTP, IMAP, POP, games, whatever we wanted, and nobody dared to say poo about it!
ISPs spying on us? Good heavens, boy, did you grow up in RUSSIA or EAST GERMANY or something?! Our ISPs didn't spy on us, we wouldn't stand for that commie cr*p!
Well except for bored BOFH Bob in the server room on the graveyard shift; he read BOFH and thought it would be fun to watch our email from time to time. Usually he was too bored to bother and played nethack and chatted on IRC instead.
Nobody much minded Bob; he didn't really care, and at least he wasn't selling your data to doubleclick and RBN mobsters like they do now!
Good heavens, boy, are you ever going to stop letting them castrate and dumb down your internet until there's nothin' left?! Now get off my lawn!
