looking for a card for hd dvd playback

selling my 7900gs oc to get something made to play hd dvd. lookings at 8500/8600 series so if anyone have any suggestions pls let me know. looking to get asap. thanks.

2600XT GDDR4 is one the best choice. Of course performance in games is not exciting, but if you need a good HD card...

I am not sure if it's really meaningful to buy a GPU for HD purposes right now. I know both AMD and NV are touting it heavily, but the truth of matter is that today's CPUs are more than adequate for handling HD decoding/streaming. Of course if you're concerned about noise, etc. (HTPC) then maybe passively cooled HD 2600 or 8600 GT might be a good choice. Even then, it might be better off with an mATX board with decent on-board graphics and let the CPU do the work. I haven't really seen CPU usage going much past 50% with Opteron 165 while playing HD contents.

Really, you won't play DX 10 on 8500GT, so take 2400PRO, i think this is one of the best choises. Look at Albatron Blue-ray decoder card, it has G86, too.

Damn. With 2400PRO you also cannot play DX10 games, so you might take a card with better HD encoding - 2xxx series low-ends.

My brother's 3.2GHz HT P4 sure can't do it in a system with 2GB DDR400 and a 7800GS.

my current card will play everything besdied 1080p evo files so thats why im getting one with h264 encoding. also its not hdcp compliant so looking to get that in a new card also. looking at the evga 8600gt for 119 i believe. let me know any opinions on this one.

so not to be blah but what video card should i pick up. i do not know alot about video so if i could get some suggestions that would be great. once again dont care about gaiming just hdcp compliant and good for hd movie playback. also must be strong enough to play 1080p and 720p mkv files, thanks for any help.

thanks for the response. got a question do you mind posting system specs so i can compare. also have you tried playing a 1080p evo file off of your hd, if so how did it fare? i believe that where im running into the problem, cant test now b/c my current card 7900gs oc does not like hdcp so i cant play off of drive. but thanks for the advice.

I think he has 7900gs obviously is doing games, for that I'd say 8600GTS is a good choice for him. That can do both game and H264 decoding.

I only run upscale for DVD to 1080i and HD-DVD. Get about 10-20% CPU load on HD-DVD.

I have not run any other compressed mode. Check the AVS forum though they have a lot of info on this.

yeah the 2400 is probably a better choice, i think it takes more load and has full hardware vc1 and its just partial on the 8 series.

basically my point was...

the 8400 and 8500 and 8600 all have the same HD decode engine. same with the 2400 and 2600.

so if you just want to decode HD might as well just buy the cheapest of the family (8400 if you want nvidia, 2400 if you want ati). i mean both series are not very good 3d cards, so you might as well not waste like $50 more getting an 8600 over an 8400.
