looking for a cable modem

I was thinking about getting cable, and instead of leasing a cable modem from th cable guys, I thought buying one would be better. Can i just buy any cable modem, or are there special ones? About how much do they cost?

I dont know where you live but here in NY, Optimum Online offers the modems for free with service if you catch them on the right deal. They just ran a deal during Valentines day where you get the modem for free if you sign up for 2 years. So I would check with you cable company to see if any such deal is available. Then again Cablevision owns both The Wiz and Optimum Online so they can make this deal happen alot easier.... Oh and as far as a modem stay away from the shark fin 3com. The Terayon Terajet is the best choice in my eyes.

find out if your cable company use DOCSIS cable modems.. if they do, go to a local BB, CC or radshack and see if they have any sort of rebate/promotion going on..

i think you would be better to rent right now, there is new 1.1 standard for docsis coming so you would be wasting your money now to get one.
