My friend is an electrical engineering student who has been having trouble finding the motivation to do well. He's been going through stress as he's being expected to be successful, but he doesn't like what it is that he's doing. His situation seemed to have always been going down hill until it finally ended in what seems like disaster after he failed some classes this past term and will probably lose his scholarship, and disappoint his parents. He's not lazy, he did better than me in HS and was one of the top 10 students, but he clearly doesn't like what he's doing, and he doesn't know what to do instead.
Having gone through the same thing, I want to to help, but I feel helpless. Besides just getting him a game or something for Christmas I wanted to get him something a little more thoughtful. I'm looking for something that will help him, and something that he can relate to, something that will make him say "this is exactly how I feel" as he's reading it. I'm not trying to solve all his problems by getting him some book, but I'd like to get him something that can help.
