Hi all - curious if anyone can recommend a good Wiki or Blogging tool. I am in an education environment and we need something that staff between departments can go to for general communication. We thought about a mailing list, but some people don't want to be bombarded by e-mails. The wiki's I've seen are ok, but I'm afraid that if people do not have the option to receive an e-mail by default, they won't keep in contact - the wiki's I've seen don't have this feature. I would particularly prefer something:

1) open source / free,

2) something easy to setup, and installed locally on one of our internal servers.

3) something user/pass-based, where users can choose to either receive an e-mail when there's a post, or not.

Any particular recommendations?

http://www.multiply.com

It's the only blog I've ever really liked, it's got lots of features. I keep in contact with people in the gaming industry using this. Through these contacts I have found more contacts. Your online circle of friends can grow fast with this, which makes it's name Multiply very accurate.

You can setup a group on multiply for your staff and set it so only the members can view the posts in this group. I have no experience setting up groups though, so I can't offer much more info. I just know it's the best I've seen so far from the user perspective.

Thanks for the Multiply link - I don't entirely understand what it is, but we really need to have something internal only and this looks like an "all online" kind of workspace. Its a bit beyond what I would like to have - a very simple setup.

I'll look into some forums - any good free ones out there?

Some mailing lists allow you to recieve emails or view them in something like a forum, I believe yahoogroups works like that. I could be wrong, it's been a few years since I've used it.
