don't care if its shadow mask or aperture grille as long as it is a high/descent quality monitor. I am trying to keep it below $400 inlcluding shipping to california.

thanks for the links

looks like the ibm is out of my price range. Now I am considering the hitachi CM772b and nec FE950+ bk. The hitachi is a little more expensive and seems to have overall better specs, but will it outperfrom the nec in brightness/contrast levels (i like monitors where the black is really black and has no hint of white noise), color vibrancies, text sharpness, and geometry?

Generally, AG tubes like the Diamondtron NF in the NEC have better color saturation, while shadow mask will be crisper and have better text. Of course, this varies for each monitor, so the best would be to go see AG and SM monitors in a store to see which type of tube you prefer.

I am in the same boat as you. I am looking for a 19" flat black monitor. I don't know if the Hitachi is perfectly flat because the picture makes it look a little round (not perfectly flat). Whereas the IBM and NEC look perfectly flat.

The specs on the Hitachi CM772B look awesome, but i can't find a store that carries in on the shelf or would order it for me for free so that i could take a look at it. I have emailed Hitachi to provide me with a way to view it live.

As for the NEC 950+, it looks really nice, but unfortunately it was compared to other monitors in some reviews and it placed like 9th out of 10 and the reason was because the text isn't all that sharp. They said it is worse in text clarity than other monitors.

If i can't somehow view the Hitachi monitor or find any reviews on it then i'll go with the IBM P96. At least i can go to an IBM store and view it and i like IBM's support and warranty service.

All I can say is try to see them in person (which is hard with black monitors) and just look as much as you can online for reviews. In my opinion, I would go for either the Hitachi or the IBM.

let me add the dell p991 to the list. the m991 placed first in the same roundup where the nec fe950+ placed 9th. the p991 is a higher end verison of the m991 and can only be better and its also cheaper (around 450 from dell) than the ibm (around 550). the nice thing is that some guy on ebay is selling a bunch of p991 for around 250 -300 dollars but they all seem to be beige. already ask the guy if he has a black one and waiting for his reply.

the hitachi does look good on paper bur from reviews that reviewed the 771 (not 772) it looks like that it won't deliver very high quality image. even my roomate's hitachi color look faded compared to my current monitor. of course the 772 might be different
