Looking for a better router, eye on ASUS RT-N56U

So after many years of dealing with crappy routers that constantly needed reboots, I was happy when I picked up netgears WNDR3400v2 several years ago. It was my first dual router but even better, it was stable enough that I've only had it lock up like 5 times in its life time (Although this is because the router is very good at resetting itself without intervention). The downsides were its 100mbit ports, and rather slow usb speeds (network drives are so awesome, but 4mbytes a second made it a chore to add videos). Also lately I have found that the first file transfer can cause the router to reset and fast bittorrents cause connection instability while web browsing.

My requirements are pretty simple, I don't need a super range (one floor house), I don't need dual band (only 2 devices out of like, 7, support it), but it needs fast ethernet and it needs fast usb access. It also needs to be the most stable brick on the planet!

I see that the ASUS RT-N56U was a popular device in the N days, and it seems to satisfy all of my request. The only reason I am bringing up this post is 1) it is over 2 years old, and no one really talks about it now and importantly how much improved it has been with updates, and 2) with AC being out, if there is anything that has replaced it in the same price range (below $90).

I don't like to mess with refurbished, nore do I plan to reflash with ddwrt because routers just suck when it comes to safely flashing bios in general, let alone third party stuff.

So it looks like the n66u is the one to get, I noticed the DDwrt site points at the Asus RT-N16 as its single band little brother, any opinions on that one?

If the main issue is Giiga an Inexpensive good solution is this - http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Unman.../dp/B001QUA6RA

As for USB, I can not say anything about the Asus RT-N16 (never physically saw one).

I have the N66U with mediocre HD box it works through the Network using Wired Giga computer.

LAN Speed testing yields 165Mb/sec. Read (from the Network Drive) and 60 Mb/sec. Write to the Drive.

The above is in b=bit. In MB B=Byte the reading is 20 MB/sec Read 7 MB/sec.

😎

P.S., there is No mbytes type of measure in Networking.

nah a gig switch wont help get faster speeds over to the hd.. the netgear itself is 100mbit only.

and why not use bytes over networking? last I checked... windows doesn't even show bits when doing a file transfer. Seems ideal to use atleast when testing usb transfer speeds.

I recently bought that exact router, but it was to replace the one that my FTTH provider provides. It has better packet switching performance and it actually boosts the TV service speed by a lot. Like, channel surfing and such. Never even figured that was affected by router performance, I would have figured it was either the PVR or the IPTV network itself.

And I'm pretty sure it's gig and not 10/100... in my pfsense firewall it's showing the upload as gig. My internet is less than 100 though so either way it works for me.

From what I read this router has much better hardware and packet handling.

4mbytes means 4 milli Bytes.

m= milli M=Mega
there are 1,000,000,000 milli in a1 M

No one uses the term milli..ever. 😛

Really... in Medicine concerning Medication it is probably the dominant unit that is used as in mg AKA Milli Gram. 😀

In our case 3mg of Xanax might help. 😉

I bought a Linksys WRT54GL about eight years ago and flashed it with a third party firmware called DD-WRT. THE ROUTER IS STILL IN USE!

It's been solid. No having to reboot or any of that crap people say they do on the Internet. But, I would like something better and the N66U might be something I purchase some time down the road, but I'm tempted to buy another WRT54GL just for a keep sake and a back up until I throw about $125 at a new router.

I don't have a need for Giga speeds since I don't have a NAS or share files over a network. In fact I block NetBIOS. If I wanted to share files I'd set up a Filezilla server.

For anyone wanting to flash the N66U with DD-WRT, read this thread. http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=171783&highlight=

So you seriously come into the "Networking" sub forum and ask for help and then spend your time criticizing people with a networking background because you don't like the way their answers are worded, even though the language is industry standard.

Tell you what, this is the best router out there..... don't know why it is so cheap:
