Looking for a audio system for a small room for about $700

CD mostly and will be feed all types of music

no room for tower speakers, any suggestions?

Also no existing equipment will be used

Is this a system you might add to later, or is this how it will stay?
For example
would you want a receiver with the ability to run surround sound for future upgrades
would you want a sub for the system (or possibly one in the future if not right away)

Where are the speakers going to end up if there's no room for tower speakers? Mounted to walls, on shelves, etc.?

So you're looking for:
CD player
Reciever / Integrated Amp / whatever
Pair of speakers
Wires / Cables to connect it all

After talking to my friend (his system) he seems to be ok with the idea of tower speakers
this will never be upgraded to a surround sound system, and will not be upgraded till all the woofers blow 😉

and a sub is not out of the question

Tower speakers in a small room? Probably not worth the space cost -- particularly with a sub -- unless bookshelves would be on stands as well.

If you're on a budget, consider the Acculine A3s. $320/pair for some pretty reasonable speakers. There are better options out there, of course, but not for that kind of money. (The A1s were an even better deal when they were on clearance for $160/pair, but sadly they are no longer.)

For the reciever, I might go with a new or used Marantz or NAD unit. Both of these are good options, neither are hugely expensive, and they're not hard to find. If you really want to cut costs, find a decent preamp and a professional power amp like an Alesis RA-100.

I'm not great with CD player recommendations, but I'm told that if it's made by Sony and has a heavy aluminum enclosure, it's likely to be quite good.

The one problem with buying online is that you really can't "try before you buy". Speakers are a lot like cars: While the Ford Mustang is quantitatively a terrible car with its' anaemic V8 and horsecart suspension, this doesn't stop Mustang owners from enjoying them every day. If you can find a brick-and-mortar store that sells used equipment, check it out. (Please note that any place that pushes expensive cables is likely run by slimeball weasels, and any place that sells Paradigm - the definitive low-budget audio equipment - will sell the sort of stuff you're looking for.)

I've never been to a Paradigm dealer that hasn't had a fancy cable display. Most of them aren't too pushy about it, though.

700 for the whole setup, not just speakers. BB has expensive (by my standards) cables but in no way would I classify BB as high end audio store. But I can see where you are coming from.

I really like the etl525 av123 speakers I got. I run them on my computer with a t-amp and it works pretty good. You might need a tiny more power if you like to listen pretty loud.
